Eskdale Holiday Cottages

One of the Lake District's most secluded valleys, Eskdale offers heritage steam railways, dramatic mountain scenery, and traditional Cumbrian life. Stretching from the coast at Ravenglass towards the high fells at the heart of the national park, the valley is home to the River Esk, iconic Herdwick sheep and some of the area's most spectacular walking routes.

While popular Lake District spots like Keswick and Windermere draw the crowds, Eskdale remains a refreshingly peaceful part of the Lake District National Park with hidden waterfalls tucked away amongst ancient woodland and heritage attractions like Hardknott Roman Fort and the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway.

Whether you're looking for a walking holiday, family break or relaxing countryside escape, Eskdale feels a world away from the busier central Lakes. On summer days, you can still find quiet stretches of riverbank along the Esk, hear the whistle of the La'al Ratty echoing through the valley and spend an afternoon in Boot without battling the crowds found elsewhere in the national park. Our Eskdale cottages are the perfect base for exploring one of the Lake District's most unspoilt valleys, whether you’re climbing Scafell Pike, spending time in the lovely village of Boot or heading to Ravenglass and the Cumbrian Coast.

Things to Do in Eskdale

Eskdale may be one of the Lake District’s most peaceful valleys, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t lots to see and do during your stay.

One of the best ways to relax and enjoy the scenery is by taking a trip on the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway, affectionately known as the 'La'al Ratty'. This heritage steam railway winds through the Eskdale Valley between Ravenglass and Dalegarth, offering a unique way to experience the valley's landscapes and history.

Walkers are spoilt for choice in Eskdale. Follow woodland trails to Stanley Ghyll Force, one of the Lake District's most impressive waterfalls, enjoy gentle riverside walks alongside the River Esk, or venture onto the surrounding fells for panoramic views across the Western Lakes. If you fancy a scenic drive, the Hardknott Pass is the steepest road in England with dramatic hairpin bends and stunning mountain scenery on both sides.

After a day of exploring, settle into one of Eskdale's traditional inns such as The Woolpack Inn, Boot Inn or Brook House Inn where you’ll find locally brewed ales, hearty food and warm Cumbrian hospitality.

There are also hidden gems to discover throughout the valley, including the restored Japanese Garden at Eskdale Green and the fascinating remnants of Eskdale's industrial heritage at Nab Gill Iron Mine.

Explore the Western Lakes from Eskdale

Set between the high fells, coast and western lakes, Eskdale is ideally placed for exploring some of the Lake District's most dramatic landscapes

Just a short drive away lies Wastwater, England's deepest lake, framed by some of the country's most dramatic mountain scenery. Nearby, Scafell Pike beckons adventurous walkers looking to conquer England's highest peak, while the historic Muncaster Castle offers beautiful gardens, woodland walks and family-friendly attractions.

The surrounding landscape is also at the heart of Herdwick country, where more than 95% of all Herdwick sheep live. The Lake District's iconic native sheep have grazed here for centuries and their distinctive black wool and white faces can be seen grazing across the valley. A quintessentially Cumbrian scene!

Whether you're seeking challenging hikes, scenic drives, family days out or simply somewhere to soak up the scenery, Eskdale provides easy access to some of the Lake District's most unforgettable landscapes.
