An easy walk in Wasdale

Kate W 22 March 2021

Wasdale is all about the big stuff. Here you can find the deepest lake, Wastwater, and the highest mountain, Scafell Pike. All the other hills and fells are fairly big too, so there are not many short and easy walks if you are exploring Wasdale for the first time. However, we have a lovely little walk which is fairly easy too - perfect if you are staying in our self catering Lake District cottages in Wasdale or nearby Gosforth. The walk takes you to Greendale Tarn - a small tarn below Middle Fell and Seatallan in Wasdale. It is not steep at all and apart from a few rocky steps, there's nothing difficult.

An easy walk in Wasdale

  • Starting from the parking on the grassy roadside at Greendale Cottages, follow the path north, uphill and through the bracken. After a third of a mile you will reach the grassy viewing area. Continue walking north up the path.

  • At the path junction, continue along the route keeping the Gill and its pools to your left-hand side. Walk for half a mile.

  • You will come to a point where two streams meet. Here, you need to continue walking along the path on the right-hand side of the Gill, past the rock pools. The path continues gently upwards for just over half a mile, until you arrive at Greendale Tarn.

  • On the way back you can head uphill onto the nose of Middle Fell, and walk back down to the car with the fabulous view of the Screes in front of you. Depending on the time of day, you might just see an incredible sunset over the top of the Screes!

Go walking in Wasdale

After your walk, we highly recommend you drive up the valley to the Wasdale Head Inn for a pint and a spot of Cumbrian food!
