  • A picturesque stone cottage perfect for walkers
  • Full of character and original features in the tranquil Miterdale valley
  • Enjoy walks along the River Mite or up into the fells and mountains
Property code: OC-SZ086

This holiday cottage offers self-catering accommodation on farm in Miterdale, one of the prettiest and least visited valleys in the Lake District. Standing above the River Mite, this comfortable holiday cottage sleeps up to four people.

Miterdale, the writer Arthur Ransome’s ‘hidden valley’, has magnificent views of Scafell, England’s highest mountain, and branches off from the quiet village of Eskdale, which lies along the valley floor of the River Esk. There are many walks from the front door of this cottage – along the valley bottom which is fairly flat, or up into the fells and mountains.

A favourite walk is over the fells, dropping down into the neighbouring Wasdale valley, with the an inn at the end of the walk. Wasdale is a valley of extremes with England’s highest mountain (Scafell), smallest church (St Olaf’s), deepest lake (Wastwater) and biggest liar competition (held annually at the inn there).

Eskdale is also a wonderful starting point for hundreds of walks. The river has natural pools for swimming and is a popular place for canoeing and fishing. The famous Ravenglass and Eskdale Miniature Railway runs along the valley, its steam trains making the leisurely 7-mile journey down to the sea.

There are five pubs in Eskdale, all welcoming children and serving real ales and a wide choice of good food. The nearest pub is a 20-minute walk away along quiet roads. It's a popular pub and so booking in advance is recommended. The village shop is a half-hour walk away and sells a comprehensive range of goods, including groceries, fresh fruit and vegetables, alcohol and newspapers. There is some reception for mobile phones on the Orange network.

The cottage also provides visitors with complementary dressing gowns and toiletries.

Please note this cottage does not accept children between the ages of 2 and 12 years old.

The front door leads to an open-plan kitchen with dining area and sitting room beyond. The lounge area has TV and a DVD player and is furnished with a three-piece suite. The kitchen is equipped with air fryer, microwave oven, refrigerator with small freezer compartment, dishwasher, washing machine and tumble dryer.

There is a double bedroom downstairs with en-suite shower and WC just off the main living area.

Upstairs is a family room with a four-poster bed and a single bed. This room is accessed via the stairs from the living area with no door between. Here there is also an en-suite (separated by a curtain) with a bath, toilet and sink.

Outside there is a decking area with a picnic table beside woodland. At certain times of the year, you can even see the river flowing by! The table catches the morning and afternoon sun so is the perfect place for an al fresco breakfast or lunch!
