Calva is a self contained apartment within a larger barn conversion at Parkergate, a former farm on the outskirts of Bassenthwaite. Calva sleeps 2 people in 1 double bedroom and has a beautiful view to Bassenthwaite Lake and the surrounding fells. The apartment, which has been recently refurbished, is south facing and benefits from the afternoon and evening sun.
Parkergate is in a wonderful position benath Skiddaw. There is excellent walking straight from the door either to the high fells of Skiddaw and Ullock Pike or more gentle routes along the shores of Bassenthwaite. Dodd Wood is an extensive wooded fell at the foot of Skiddaw. The forest tracks offer easy walking and clear waymarked trails. The summit of Dodd has a fine view across Derwentwater and Bassenthwaite. Dodd Wood is also home to the Osprey Watch project where a visiting pair of ospreys have nested for nearly ten years now.
Bassenthwaite Village is a gentle 30 minute walk from Calva. There is a good pub in the village called The Sun. You can also enjoy a walk from the village taking in pretty St Bega's church that nestles on the lake shore. The church is said to be the inspiration for Alfred Tennyson's Morte d'Arthur after his visit there in 1835.
Calva Cottage can be booked along with any of the other neighbouring apartments to sleep a larger group - Whinlatter (sleeps 5), Ullock Pike (sleeps 2) and Black Moss (sleeps 5). The main farmhouse sleeps 8/10 people.
