Holidays in Mungrisdale

The area to the north of Skiddaw is known as Back o’Skiddaw. In comparison, the similar landscape to the north of Blencathra has no such aptly descriptive name. It is almost as if this area want's to remain a well kept secret. Several sparse hamlets with no more than a few properties populate the area, creating a distinctly remote and rural feel.

Mungrisdale and Mosedale are the primary locations, on the edge of superb walking country typified by smooth sweeping slopes, deep mysterious valleys and a handful of sharply defined ridges. The local pub is the Mill Inn, a 17th Century coaching inn with a delightful riverside beer garden. A huge millstone is set into the bar as a decorative reminder of the building’s history.

The location by the river is serene and restful; the wooded gill is a perfect sanctuary for local wildlife. Red squirrels are a popular sight and the wild fell ponies are quite simply a delight.

The east ridge of Bannerdale Crags is an exciting scramble and easier than it appears from below. Whilst the crowds congregate on nearby Blencathra, you can enjoy this thrilling ridge all by yourself. 

Souther Fell is one of the last Lake District outposts before the land levels out towards the Eden Valley. You can often see hang gliders taking off from the smooth grassy summit. Legend has it that a spectral army was seen marching along the top of the fell, but on inspection in the morning, there were no tracks to be found. 

The hills here are wild and remote, the sense of freedom is immense. You can roam for miles in any direction you please, although take care on Carrock Fell, which is littered with old mine shafts.

Mungrisdale is the place to make an ascent of Blencathra and not see a soul till you reach the summit. From Mosedale you can retrace the steps of the early Victorian tourists by walking to Bowscale Tarn in hunt of a legendary immortal fish. Read more in our Bowscale blog.
