Sophisticated apartment accommodation, within an impressive 19th-century building in the Lakeland market town of Keswick, ideal for a couple and their dog.

Keswick

Keswick is one of the jewels of the Lake District and the town has long been popular with tourists. It is also home to Sally's Lake District Cottages so we have an extensive selection of self-catering Keswick cottages. You can enjoy Keswick's beautiful setting from a number of fells and peaks including Latrigg and Friar's Crag.

Top things to do In Keswick

Keswick is a great location in the north lakes and has so many highlights, from museums and sightseeing to adventure centres, festivals and a theatre to name a few. The shores of Derwentwater are nearby and you'll find a host of places to eat and drink in the town. To give you a taste of Keswick, we've rounded up our favourite things to do from our holiday cottages in Keswick.

Stroll around Derwentwater

Derwentwater is Keswick’s beautiful lake. It is a short stroll from the heart of the town and there are picnic benches on the foreshore to sit and take in the view. Rowing boats can be hired here and the shingled beach along the shore is the perfect place for paddling in the shallows. The Keswick Launch offers leisurely cruises on the lake and you can hop off at any of the seven jetties around the lake for a walk.

Take in the views from Latrigg

Latrigg is the family-friendly mountain of choice for Keswick folk. It is a lovely walk and you don’t need to be super fit to reach the stunning viewpoint on the summit. You can enjoy this walk straight from the door of many of our Keswick cottages.

Hike up Catbells

The famous guidebook writer Alfred Wainwright wrote that no visit to Keswick was complete without climbing Catbells. It is one of the most iconic Lake District walks. Take our tip and hop on the Launch across Derwentwater so you can view Catbells in all its glory from the boat before stepping off to climb it for yourself. Parking is very limited around the mountain so we recommend taking the leisurely launch boat ride to get there.

Climb Skiddaw

Skiddaw is one of the must climb mountains in Keswick. It is a huge presence in the town casting a fine backdrop. Our top tip is to make sure you include the summit of Little Man on your way to the main top of Skiddaw. The spectacular views from here are beyond compare and it is often a lot quieter than the main mountain.

Bring your dog along on holiday

Keswick was voted the most dog-friendly town in the UK in 2014 and it’s easy to see why. There are fantastic dog walks in Keswick along lakeside paths and over high fells. Many of the pubs, shops and cafes are dog friendly and several have their own four-legged member of staff too. The annual Keswick Scruffs Show event is a must-see and celebrates the talents of local and visiting dogs alike.

Head to the pub

The market town of Keswick has some iconic pubs which are tourist attractions in themselves. The George and the Dog and Gun are charming pubs full of tradition and offering some of the finest local Lakeland ales including Jennings, Hawkshead and Keswick Brewery. Enjoy a pint of ale with the locals and listen to their tales of adventure on the fells. You never know, you might even see a celebrity of the outdoors world!

Go shopping

Independent shopping is booming in central Keswick. It is a great place for some retail therapy at any time of year with shops to suit every taste. For outdoor lovers, there are more than ten outdoor shops including industry leaders Needle Sports and George Fishers. There are local boutiques too selling Cumbrian arts and crafts and popular Cumbrian brands such as Herdy, Hawkshead Relish and Home of Millican.

Enjoy the local food

Keswick has a fantastic reputation for good food and you will find a number of great restaurants, pubs and cafes to enjoy. There is something for everything from fine dining to local coffee shops and bakeries or why not grab a takeaway and relax on one of the many picnic benches dotted about the town. We love the coffee and fabulous cakes in Merienda and a cup of tea with buttery crumpets at Mrs F's Fine Food Emporium.

Entertain the little ones

Whatever the weather, there is always a great choice of activities for entertaining the kids in Keswick. The leisure centre has a fun swimming pool with a wave machine and water slide. Clip and climb is available at the town centre climbing wall as well as a superb soft play area. Fitz Park has a great play area and plenty of space for the little ones to run around. You can also hire off-road buggies and child carriers from Kiddiwinks.

Enjoy a Keswick Festival

Keswick is famed for its many festivals. The town is kept busy all year round with events to entertain every member of the family and even the dog too. The Jazz Festival and the Mountain Festival are fantastic experiences and The Theatre by the Lake rolls out festivals and events all year long. We recommend visiting the Keswick Film Festival, Words by the Water, the Christian Convention, Keswick Beer Festival and the Victorian Christmas Fayre to name but a few.
