Mysterious stone circles of Ullswater

Hannah 15 January 2021

Castlerigg Stone Circle is undoubtedly the most famous and popular stone circle near our self catering cottages in the Lake District

But meanwhile high up on Askham Fell above Ullswater, there is an altogether different stone circle. No manicured grass around these stones, the land is as wild as the day they were put in place.  It is worth taking an OS map and a compass, there are several prehistoric monuments on Askham Fell and it can be quite a mission to find them all.

The Cockpit Stone Circle is the most impressive and most complete. It measures 27 metres across and is close to the Roman road that once ran across the top of the fell. With a bit of hunting and a deviation to the west, you might find the stone avenue. Easier to find are the collapsed cairns and ancient rocks which historians believe to be burial mounds.

A mile or so away on Swarth Fell there is another stone circle, not in as good shape as the Cockpit. There are 65 stones in all but the shape is not as easy to make out, especially from this photo. Definitely one for the completists.

The walk is around 2 miles from Askham village or Pooley Bridge. We have four cottages at High Winder that are even closer. A path at the end of the private lane directly follows the course of High Street making the navigation a bit easier.
