- Dodd View is two cottages converted into one, the end two of a terrace of four, situated quite close to the A591 main road to Bassenthwaite some four miles from Keswick. There is ample parking and unloading space to the front and side of the cottage, and at the back there is a typical Cumbrian garden, with a raised patio area and table and chairs with a view across Bassenthwaite Lake to Barf and Grisedale Pike.
The conversion is sympathetic, with a good size utility/bootroom, downstairs loo, kitchen with a large table and six chairs, lounge with two sofas and an armchair, a snug with sofa, and two sets of stairs leading to three double bedrooms and two shower rooms with loo each, one with the addition of a bath. The hot water and heating system was excellent. We had couldn't ignite the gas fire in the kitchen, but enjoyed the log burner in the main lounge.
Whilst we thought the size of the cottage was excellent for three couples, we felt there was a lack of storage in the two smaller bedrooms. A wider chest of drawers instead of the tallboy in the right hand bedroom, for example, and although we appreciate the difficulty of the roof pitch in both, perhaps some sort of wardrobe arrangement rather than the hooks and hatstand may be possible? Also there was no lock on the main bathroom door which was annoying. Nevertheless, the beds and bedding were very comfortable, clean and fresh.
The kitchen was reasonably well equipped, but what was lacking was pasta bowls, pint glasses, some more food preparation boards - and a set of sharp knives in a block would have been nice.
What let the ground floor down was lighting, always so important to create atmosphere, particularly in the main lounge. The one lamp in the corner needs some balance in the room, maybe an uplighter to the right of the fireplace, although there is no socket there, so unless you have the very bright ceiling light on, the room can be gloomy. In the smaller lounge, it is only the ceiling lights, again very bright. Also the main lounge really needs a coffee table in the middle, there are only two small occasional tables for drinks etc. We actually moved the sofa from the small lounge to the main lounge while we were there, and didn't use the small lounge. (We did move it back again before we left). We also thought the front door itself was rather ill fitting, as we could see daylight around it and could hear the noise from the main road through it quite clearly.
We feel if these few points could be addressed, Dodd View would much score higher.
