For a solo or romantic break in Cumbria, stay at this charming retreat within the grounds of a Grade II-listed building. It’s on the edge of Brampton, a welcoming market town, and perfectly placed for discovering the gorgeous surrounding countryside. Brampton itself has a great selection of independent shops and eateries (1 mile).

Accessible via 12 stone steps, this single-storey, studio-style property has lovely views that set the tone for a relaxing stay. Inside, the wood-beamed living area features a soft sofa and Smart TV, alongside a corner kitchen fully equipped for home-cooked meals, plus a dining table by the window. After dinner, unwind in the stunning freestanding bath – located in the bedroom space – before transitioning to the super-king-size bed for a restful night. There’s also an en-suite shower room for quicker washes. Outside, a private garden at the foot of the steps includes a bubbling hot tub for starlit evenings, a seating area with a charcoal BBQ (available from 1 April to 30 September), and private parking for one car. Guests can also book a private one-hour daily slot in the on-site indoor swimming pool, which is open year-round for guests aged over four.

Not far away, Talkin Tarn Country Park (2 miles) is a scenic spot for cycling and walking, while the lively city of Carlisle (10 miles) is home to a historic castle, a beautiful cathedral and a host of bars, cafés and restaurants to explore. Walkers can also make a beeline for Alston (20 miles), a historic market town known as the gateway to the North Pennines National Landscape, where fells, moorland, tumbling streams and waterfalls await.
