Haweswater & Martindale
Tucked away to the east, Haweswater is a very solitary place. The rough fellsides and crags encase a valley that is home to a herd of majestic red deer, who roam the steep sides of Riggindale.
The Ullswater steamer sails to Howtown, one of the best ways to reach Martindale.
There are some lovely walks here from diminutive Hallin Fell to craggy Steel Knotts. Keep an eye out for the deer on Hallin Fell!
At the far end of Ullswater you can trace the old Roman road between Penrith and Ambleside. On Askham Fell you can see the Cockpit, an ancient stone circle. For more history, head to Martindale with its handsome little chapel at the head of the valley.
Angle Tarn is quite a hike from Patterdale or Martindale but the picturesque setting makes it all worthwhile.
