Shopping in Ambleside

Hannah Jury 24 March 2021

Not everyone comes to the Lake District to climb the fells. We have festivals, great shops and museums too. For instance, Cockermouth and Ambleside are great for shopping; there are plenty of great independent shops near Sally's self-catering Lake District cottages. It is nice to find something a little bit different, something you wouldn’t normally find on the High Street.

Here is a guide to some of the best shops in Ambleside

Detail Retail

Detail is the go-to shop when you need something a little bit quirky. Detail also sells funky homewares from Orla Keily, Herdy and Joseph Joseph.

Bath House

You will just love the Bath House, the front window exudes luxury. Inside you can buy all manner of grooming products, in particular, the men’s grooming products are slightly more extravagant than normal razors and would make a great gift.

Rock Shop

The Rock Shop is something of a gold mine. It looks quite unassuming from the outside but inside you will find some pretty spectacular fossils, all for sale too! The rock pit is superb, full of polished semi-precious stones, like a ball pool. As long as you take your shoes off, you can dive in and enjoy the sensation.

Ambleside Wine Shop

Despite the name, the wine shop sells local beers, world wines and lots of whisky and whiskey. Whatever your fancy, you can pick up something to enjoy at the Ambleside Wine Shop. In particular, you can pick up local cider and damson gin.

Climbers Shop

There are plenty of outdoor shops in Ambleside and the Climbers Shop is one of the best. They provide expert boot fitting, advice on the right clothing and best of all; they are all locals and can advise you on walking or climbing routes too.
