Keswick is not only the adventure capital of the UK but also the holiday capital for dogs and their owners. We have plenty of dog-friendly Lake District cottages in Keswick and beyond. The shops, pubs and cafes have recognised the importance of welcoming visitors on four legs as well as two and most pubs and cafes have a tin of dog biscuits behind the bar. Here are our top ten tried and tested places to eat with your dog in Keswick.
The George Hotel
The George Hotel is home to the famous Cow Pie containing an entire pound of meat! Dogs are welcome in the bar and on hard floors.
Java
Java serves fabulous hot chocolate and all sorts of coffee and provides comfy sofas to sit on, plus smiley service. There is Wi-Fi here and computers upstairs – free as long as you are drinking plenty of coffee. The café is dog friendly inside and out.
Lakes Bar and Bistro
Newly refurbished with a stylish interior and local slate features, Lakes Bar and Bistro is a definite favourite of ours. There is a contemporary lunch and evening menu, and the portions are generous. Dogs are welcome throughout.
Square Orange
As well as the best coffee in town, the Square Orange serves a good selection of continental beers, amazing pizzas and tapas. It is dog friendly, there are board games and regular music nights.
Jan's Lakeland Sandwich Shop
The Lakeland Sandwich Shop at the bottom of town also has a sunny seating area outside where you can enjoy your coffee and sandwich (our favourite is the falafel ciabatta) and watch the world go by. Dogs are welcome inside whilst you place your order.
Annie's Pantry
If you are planning a walk up Walla Crag, chances are you will set off through Springs Farm. The old barn has been renovated and completely fitted out to serve delicious homemade cakes, light bites and hot drinks. There is a nice seating area outside Annie's Pantry by the beck. Dogs are welcome inside and out.
Dog & Gun
This is THE place to go for dog owners but expect to be outnumbered on the dog to people ratio. A dog menu is available and a fresh free water bowl for each dog. The Dog & Gun is also home to the legendary hungry fell walker’s favourite, the Hungarian Goulash, bubbling away in the same pot for over 400 years (so they say).
The Chalet
Not strictly in Keswick, but it is only a 15–20-minute walk away and well worth it. The Chalet is an impressive building with expensive-looking furniture and decor but a well-priced menu. Pups are welcome during the day and there is a handy basket of towels by the door for soggy dogs.
Hope Park Cafe
Cafe Hope is newly built, on the edge of the popular golf course. It is just a stone’s throw from the lake where your four-legged friend can enjoy a splash in Derwentwater or a more sedate ride on the launch. Paws, tongues and tails inside the boat at all times, please!
