- Elm How is a beautiful, well equipped and very remote cottage close to Patterdale. Four large bedrooms and a lovely large sitting room made it feel spacious even when at full capacity with 8 adults. The beds are really comfortable.
The kitchen has everything we could have needed as well as a large fridge/freezer and a large dining table. The walks from the house are fabulous - we went up to the Easedale Tarn, up to St Sunday Crag, to top of Hellvellyn and a couple of walks on the other side of the lake, including High Street, all without use of a car.
It was nice to have a selection of games, we also took with us a selection of DVDs and our own games. The Wifi was reliable and worked in the whole house apart from the kitchen.
Although we liked the feeling of remoteness, it was a good 40 mins to the nearest supermarket. The shops at Glenridding (less than 10 mins away by car) sell essentials at a premium price.
The nearest hotel was a five minute drive down the track - but not a great selection of food for walkers, The pub opposite was horrible - full of dogs on seats, etc, so we only ate out one night.
The cottage was called "dog-friendly" which worried us a bit, as we hate the smell of dogs, but the cottage didn't smell and felt really clean.
The only downside with the cottage was the fluctuating water temperature in the showers - scalding hot to freezing cold. The bath was lovely. If you have a very low car, the track could prove a problem, but it was OK when driving really slowly.
