An inviting holiday cottage for four, capturing far-reaching, undulating views and in a great location for gentle hill or riverside walks, as well as more ambitious fell climbing.

Set in the picturesque village of Eskdale, this fantastic holiday cottage offers self-catering accommodation with splendid views across to the fells. It is handy for both the pub and the village shop, there are also hundreds of walks right from the front door either on the fells or along the banks of the River Esk, which flows from the top of the valley down to the estuary at Ravenglass, an old fishing village complete with a ruined Roman bath-house. The river has natural pools for swimming and is a popular place for canoeing and fishing.

The famous Ravenglass and Eskdale Miniature Railway runs along the valley, its steam trains making the leisurely 7-mile journey down to the sea - Irton Road station is just a short walk from the cottage - the trains can be seen from the garden. There are five pubs in the valley, all welcoming children and serving real ales and a wide choice of good food.

The village shop is just a ten minute walk away and sells a comprehensive range of goods, including groceries, fresh fruit and vegetables, food to go, alcohol, newspapers and outdoor equipment and clothing.

The door leads into a small porchway area leading into the sitting room with TV and CD player. The kitchen leads on from the lounge and is fully equipped with microwave, fridge (with small freezer compartment), electric cooker and dishwasher. A welcome pack of milk, tea and coffee is provided to start you off on your holiday. There is dining for four in the kitchen.

The downstairs twin bedroom leads on from the kitchen. Upstairs is the super-king-size bedroom and bathroom with shower over the bath.

There is full reception for mobile phones on the EE network and some reception for others. Enjoy the enclosed, lawned garden which is shared with next door. The cottage next door sleeps four and can be hired along with this cottage for parties of eight who wish to share a holiday together.

We love this area, and the cottage location was fabulous. The cottage was fine, although the kitchen and bathroom are basic for the price. The shower is badly located, it was impossible to use without leaning backwards. The lounge is small and not the most comfortable. Great sized main bedroom with a lovely big bed, would benefit from a memory foamRead more mattress topper. The shared utility area was useful, although I didn't appreciate ?the cleaner removing my still wet washing from the dryer. Hide

This was our 5th visit to Damson Cottage. Great location for walking and wonderful views. Shop is only a mile away and nice to walk to if you avoid the raod. We walked 3.5 miles by the river Esk to Dalegarth station and got the train back. Walked up Irton Pike with its 360 degree views. However, on the Wednesday I slipped in the bath/shower. Bath fRead moreloor is sloped under the shower head - beware. Ended up in Whitehaven A&E. Next year has a 40% price increase so undecided about a revisit. Hide
