The cottage is ideally placed, just a few minutes drive to Keswick with a cafe and gallery above it, with stunning views and several walks nearby. However it needed a good clean, in particular the kitchen and utensils; the fridge was rusty, the hob needed a good clean as did the waste bin and the knives in the block had bits of residual food on thRead moreem, requiring cleaning before use. The toilet and shower rooms have been updated and, although small, they were clean and adequate. The living/bedroom is ideal for a person on their own or a couple and is dog friendly, the owners even providing a drinking bowl and mat for a dogs use as well as individual pots of milk, a selection of biscuits and some teabags for travellers. However the furniture is outdated. The bedroom section had a wardrobe and dressing table which were obviously old, heavy and dark; and the living area had two large 2-seater leather sofas, which I couldnt understand the need for both as the cottage is designed for two people. If one was taken away it would make the living area a lot more spacious. It is obvious that the cottage could do with an update regarding furniture but as the three individual (although can be linked) cottages and cafe/gallery are up for sale I doubt the current owners will be prepared to do this. The garden, shared with all 3 cottages, is relatively small but sufficient for relaxing in, although the garden furniture could do with a good clean (the bistro table and 4 chairs) and the wooden benches could do with sanding as I got several splinters from the wood. If a couple were to rent Elm Cottage it would be considered as a fair rental price but for one person, and considering the lack of cleanliness and outdated furniture, it seems a bit costly considering other available properties of similar size with a much better rating for cleanliness. This cottage is genuinely gorgeous! The location is incredible, only 10 minutes from Keswick and Whinlatter Forest. It has a lovely enclosed garden and is really well laid out. It had absolutely everything we needed for our week long holiday. It was well kept and perfectly clean. We didn't notice that there were steps to get into the accommodation,Read more but that was on us for not noticing them on the photos. As other reviewers have mentioned you can hear footsteps above when the cafe is open, but it's not too loud and we were out most of the times the cafe was open, so it really wasn't an issue. I would genuinely highly recommend this cottage to any couples looking for a well situated, well appointed place to stay. Hide

Great wee cottage ideal for fell runners cycling and hill climbing just 3 miles from Keswick and there are plenty of dog friendly places to eat and the cafe over the cottages does a good mac and cheese and a delicious home made scone

The property was clean and well equipped. It was in a great location, there were plenty of walks starting from the cottage or very close by. Keswick is nearby and has lots of shops, places to eat and activities.

The accommodation is ideally situated in Thornthwaite for those wanting to get out on the hills. A lot can be done without using the car. Spotlessly clean and perfectly comfortable. Ok as a base but there is constant noise overhead when the gallery is open. No windows to open at night for fresh air when the patio doors are locked but fabulous viewsRead more from the patio and lovely enclosed garden. Hide

Cosy, comfortable and relaxing. We had a wonderful week in this quiet cottage and enjoyed the views across to Skiddaw, night skies including the full moon rising over Skiddaw and accessibility to rides, walks, cafes, pubs and Keswick. The cottage was well equipped and thoughtfully laid out making it easy to live in.
