Set at the gateway to the Duddon Valley in the pretty village of Broughton-in-Furness, this inviting cottage has been tastefully renovated and extended, retaining plenty of its original character.

Set at the gateway to the tranquil Duddon Valley, this attractive holiday home is a delightful 17th-century property nestled in the bustling village of Broughton-in-Furness. Laden with characterful features revealing the history of the building while having been thoughtfully renovated to a high standard it's a gem of a base to explore the southern Lake District. Sleeping six people in three comfortable bedrooms this semi detatched, Grade II-listed cottage is ideal for a family or small group to relax. It has comfortable socialising spaces including a glorious sun room, a stylish warm living room, a modern kitchen and an enclosed garden with patio and raised lawn. In the Summer, guests can sit outside in the garden and enjoy the BBQ that is provided.

Broughton-in-Furness is a wonderfully welcoming example of a thriving Cumbrian village. Set around a Georgian village square with an obelisk at its heart, it boasts award winning pubs with great locally sourced food and real ales, two excellent cafes, a great play park, and a much-loved bakery, grocers and butchers shop. There are easy walks from the door including the Broughton Railway Path and the Duddon Mosses Nature Reserve. The village is nestled between the Irish Sea and the south western fells. Less visited than some of the more hectic areas of the Lake District, this area boasts some fabulous walking without the crowds. Why not head up to beautiful Seathwaite in the Duddon Valley and walk up Stickle Pike? You can even cheat a little and take the snaking narrow road over to Broughton Mills, meaning that you can start half way up! Alternatively, try one of the guided walks exploring the sands of the Duddon Estuary.

Beautiful Coniston lies nearby where there's lots of fun to be had on the water. If you're feeling energetic you can hire a rowing boat or kayak to explore the beaches around the five-mile lake. For a more leisurely exploration of the water, why not catch the beautiful Steam Yacht Gondola during the summer months? You could make a day of it and explore the rich cultural heritage on show at Brantwood, Victorian polymath John Ruskin's House. To stretch your legs, head up The Old Man of Coniston, the mighty peak standing guard over the town.

On arrival at the front of the property guests are greeted by a spacious hallway with a traditional tiled floor and plenty of room for your party's coats and shoes. From here you access the cosy living room; it's a gorgeous space blending traditional features with 20th-century furniture pieces and subtle decor. It has been tastefully renovated to incorporate a wood burner on a magnificent slab of local slate with an initial supply of logs provided, a Samsung Smart TV and beautiful glass doors through to the sun room flooding the room with light. The owners have thoughtfully left a selection of books and local walking information to keep guests interested. Moving through to this lovely sun room you'll find a settee and dining table and chairs, ideal for sunny morning breakfasts.

A door from the living room leads through to the extension area of the house which houses a modern well-equipped kitchen with light units, a built-in fridge/freezer, microwave, dishwasher, washer dryer, fan oven and gas hobs. It also has a large antique dining table ideal for post dinner discussions of your Lake District adventures.

Back in the entrance hall is the corner staircase to the first floor. You really get a feel for the character of the building as you ascend the stairs to the large landing with its exposed beams and aged latched wooden door. Here you'll find the three light airy bedrooms. There are two doubles and a twin room. These all benefit from chests of drawers, hanging hooks and stylish modern soft furnishings. The spacious family bathroom is also on this floor, this has a full bath with over bath mixer shower.

Outside there is a delightful gated back garden with patio area which is ideal for opening out the conservatory doors and enjoying sunny evening meals. There's also a raised lawn and mature trees looking out to fields and hillsides beyond.

The cottage was lovely I enjoyed all the original building, but I couldn't get any electricity on ground floor to heat it There were storms and we got absolutely soaking wet and we had no way to dry any of the clothing. The cottage was in a good area and it was an excellent backyard for dogs. Couldn't be more pleased. The beds, however, less somethRead moreing to be desired. Mattresses and pillows ridiculously thin. However, the cottage was beautiful. Hide

Our 2nd stay at lovely Sykehouse cottage. We have no complaints and unlike previous guests we had no problem with the beds. We found them comfortable and supportive. Road noise is no longer a problem as the windows have had secondary glazing. The kitchen is modern and the house is comfortable as a whole.

Would be 5 star all round but for the beds - thin mattresses on hard frames. Very uncomfortable sleeping - poor sleep throughout the week for us both. A fantastic cottage, great layout, excellent kitchen and kit and one of our favourite places. Let down by poor beds - which is why we cant recommend it to friends.

Excellent cottage, full of all equipment needed for a long or short stay. Clean an comfortable. Walking distance to a lovely village with 3 pubs (all dog and child friendly), a butchers, grocers and bakery. Main supermarkets are about 30 mins away but the grocers is pretty well equipped and good value for money. Would 100% recommend and stay again.
