Hi there! Madonna & Tony are fabulous, aren't they? I'm thrilled that you had a wonderful stay in such a beautiful area.

The Smithy is a lovely well-converted cottage. We particularly appreciated the communal space which was larger and better set out than in many two bedroom holiday cottages and felt spacious rather than cramped. There was a comprehensive file of information in the cottage, plus useful leaflets and booklets about local attractions and walks. The owners lived nearby and were friendly and helpful. The twin bedroom was lovely, but did directly overlook the living area. This was not a problem for us, but if we had had small children then the fact that light and sound from the living area came directly into this room might have been a problem. As noted in the cottage description there really is no mobile phone reception in the cottage (at least not for O2) and when we stayed the WiFi was not working, There is also no landline to the cottage so you should plan accordingly. There was O2 reception on a bridge in the village and WiFi at the pub - so you can at least get check the weather forecast daily albeit after a short walk.

Local amenities were good for a small Lake District village - the local shop had everything necessary (if not quite the range of local food suggested on its website), the Bower House Inn was an excellent local pub. There were a number of interesting walks from the cottage, including an option to walk directly to Scafell Pike - a long but manageable distance - (though we chose to drive to the National Trust car park instead).

Hi Louise, thank you for your comments, I'm delighted to hear that you had a happy holiday and enjoyed plenty of walking. I promise I will investigate the WiFi issue you mentioned. We would love to welcome you back on your future Lake District adventures!
