Dower House Cottage was the cleanest holiday home I have ever stayed in and is well equipped. It even had decent knives, something that is sadly lacking in most holiday cottages. Margaret greeted us when we arrived and was very helpful and friendly. We appreciated the milk and chocolate cake and the beautiful vase of pink roses which were all very welcome. The cottage itself has outstanding views towards Lake Windermere and is very peaceful and private. There are numerous walks directly from the house including Ambleside, Hawkshead and from Wray Castle itself along the water's edge to Claife where you can take the ferry across to Bowness. I would highly recommend Dower House Cottage.

We loved our winter stay at the Dower House and its stunning location just yards from the door of Wray Castle with views across the lake towards Wansfell and Ambleside. The cottage was exceptionally clean and well-equipped, in addition to which Margaret had added some thoughtful Christmassy touches including a tree and decorations. It was warm and cosy, and we felt immediately at home. We especially loved the covered verandah and spent hours watching and photographing the many visiting birds. Nearby are good footpaths to Ambleside and Hawkshead (about 3 miles each) and, in summer, the ferry would also run to Ambleside. Margaret and Charlie were helpful, friendly hosts who made us feel extremely welcome. We look forward to returning soon and would highly recommend whether you want a walking holiday or a peaceful relaxing break.
