Pull on your walking boots, pack a picnic and head off in any direction on fabulous Lakeland walks from this cottage in the village of Elterwater. Sleeping four guests, and also welcoming canine companions, the two-bedroom abode is in a superb setting for exploring the picturesque lakes of Elter Water, Loughrigg Tarn and Windermere. It is also just 4 miles from vibrant Ambleside and 8.5 miles from the village of Grasmere, where English poet William Wordsworth lived.
Let yourselves into this inviting retreat via the front door and porch and find yourselves in a homely lounge, which still reveals some of its old timbers. Light the open fire on chilly days and toast in its warming glow as you chat about the day’s adventures. Find a film for everyone to enjoy on the TV or play your favourite tunes through the mini music system before deciding whose turn it is to whip up the next delicious meal. Make your way through to the kitchen/diner, which has a beamed ceiling and flagstone floor, to prepare your feast then gather around the table in here to enjoy it. At the end of each superb day away, climb the stairs up to the two bedrooms. These include a king-size with an en-suite shower room, and a twin. A family bathroom and a handy drying cupboard are also up here. Carry your morning coffee out to the patio in front of the cottage on fine days. Open a bottle of wine in the garden to the rear of the property on summer evenings.
Spend mornings shopping in charming Ambleside, which has many independent outlets, boutiques and galleries. Take a horse-drawn carriage or walk 1 mile down to Waterhead to hire an electric or rowing boat or to enjoy a relaxing cruise out on Lake Windermere.
