Savour a truly special stay at this gorgeous stone cottage in Cumbria that was once a schoolhouse. Sleeping five guests, the three-bedroom hideaway, is situated beside Lyvennet Beck, on the fringes of Crosby Ravensworth, and makes a magical retreat. Nestled in beautiful gardens, and with a winter-warming wood burner, the single-storey abode is 15 miles from Penrith and 5 miles from the beginnings of the magnificent Lake District.

Enter to find spacious accommodation with an array of original features. The impressive lounge/diner, with its honey-coloured woodwork and arched windows, is a fabulous place to gather at the end of the day. Light the wood burner in here, then settle down in its glow to watch the Smart TV and enjoy the home theatre system. Prepare tasty meals with the delicious Cumbrian produce you have sourced then pull chairs up to the table in the lounge/diner to feast together. On summer evenings, have coffee afterwards in the sunroom, which overlooks the stream. At the end of each exciting day, head off to the beautiful bedrooms. These include a king-size bedroom, a single and a double, with an en-suite shower room. There is also a family bathroom. Soak up the serenity out in the delightful garden. Play ball with the children on the grass, keep an eye on them near the water and enjoy spotting wildlife.

Venture 10 miles from the cottage to Haweswater in the Lake District, where there are footpaths to follow along its shores and up on the fells around it. Head 15 miles to Pooley Bridge to take a trip on a steam cruiser on Ullswater or to follow the 20-mile Ullswater Way around the lake. Spend afternoons in Penrith, browsing in the shops and stocking up on local delicacies. Visit the castle ruins while you are there.

We had a lovely stay at Monks Bridge. It is a comfortable house, charming and full of character. The kitchen is extremely well equipped. The beds are very comfortable. We enjoyed the generous welcome goodies, particularly the fudge! The information on local walks and where to eat was helpful. We had two very good meals at the Butchers Arms.

Absolutely loved our stay at Monks Bridge! This was our third visit but a few years on from our last stay. Happily everything was exactly as we remembered it. The property is fantastic as is the location, perfect for getting outdoors into the countryside or just for cosying up indoors. The cottage is in a nice village with a great pub just up the road. We had an issue with the cottage being cold but the owner sorted it out very quickly and for that we were very grateful.

Lovely building with quality furnishing and fittings, the log burner was brilliant for us as the weather was unkind and kept us in for three days so were very comfortable.

We had a wonderful week at Monks Bridge. The house is beautiful and in such a lovely location. We had everything we needed in the house and also thoroughly enjoyed the garden and very comfortable garden furniture. Sitting outside enjoying the sunshine with the sound of the babbling brook was just perfect!!

This is a fabulous holiday home. The building is simply stunning, totally aesthetically perfect in how it has been decorated. All the furniture and pictures and everything is absolutely right for the character of the place. Very clean and very comfy and cosy all round. Nice big comfy sofas by the fire and TV area, two different indoor eating areas Read moreand the lovely conservatory overlooking the stream as another place to relax. The garden also had many places to choose from to sit and enjoy what was to offer, either the babbling stream or the different areas of patio, grass, trees and flower beds as a vista depending on your preference. This is the best equipped holiday home we have stayed in, both kitchen wise, heating wise, electronics wise, everything has been thought about and properly provided. While we were there we needed to contact the owners for one query that we had, and they were brilliant and quick at getting it all sorted, communication was excellent. Lovely countryside around for easy walking terrain, and if you want more...half an hour drive takes you to the dramatic fells of the lake district for more challenging climbing and walking. I would fully recommend a stay at Monks Bridge. Hide

A beautiful area and village, great local pub and charming cottage thoughtfully converted from its previous use as a village school. Well furnished - super comfortable bed - and very well equipped. It would be heaven for a spring, summer or autumn break especially since there's a lovely garden. Our visit was in December when the problem of heating Read morean old property in cold weather was highlighted. Storage heating, externally controlled and restricted, was not enough even though supplemented by a living room log burner and unlimited wood supply.
