Property code: OC-GL028

Bask in the sunshine and watch the river meandering past when you stay at this delightful Lakeland cottage. Sleeping just three guests, the charming, dog-friendly retreat dates back to the 1700s and provides inviting accommodation for a couple or a small family. Situated at Clappersgate, in the heart of Cumbria and the Lake District, the cottage is less than 1 mile from Ambleside and the same distance from Lake Windermere.

Tear yourselves away from the views out across the lake and towards Wansfell and enter by taking a few steps down into the porch. Wander in to find accommodation that offers both character and comfort. Make your way into the welcoming lounge/diner, where you can light the wood burner on autumn and winter days. Switch on the TV, watch a DVD or choose a book from the shelf. Amble through to the kitchen to brew cups of tea or prepare a homecooked meal to share with your loved ones at the table in the main room. There is also a WC at ground-floor level. When you are ready to turn in for the night, climb the steep cottage-style stairs to the first floor. A king-size bedroom and a double, which is suitable for one person only, are both up here, together with the family bathroom. Wake up to glorious views out across your picturesque surroundings. Take in the views over morning coffee from your private patio. Stroll down to the River Brathay, where there is a shared seating area, plus hooks and access to the river for canoes and kayaks.

Wander into Ambleside to explore the galleries, boutiques and independent shops. Make your way to the shore at Waterhead to take a cruise on the lake. Visit the impressive, Victorian Wray Castle, 2.5 miles away, also on the banks of Windermere.

  • 2 bedrooms – 1 king-size, 1 double (suitable for 1 person only)
  • 1 bathroom with shower over the bath and WC, plus 1 additional WC
  • Halogen hob, fridge, freezer, washing machine
  • Welcome pack
  • Wood burner (logs available to purchase from the office)
  • TV and DVD player
  • No mobile signal
  • Private patio with garden furniture
  • Shared access to the River Brathay and enclosed grassed area with seating on the riverside – there are boat hooks provided for securing kayaks and canoes
  • Shared courtyard parking is available at the front of the property for up to 2 cars
  • Storage for bikes and outdoor equipment in the private carport opposite the cottage
  • Pub and shop 1 mile, beach 22 miles
  • Please note, the stone walls of this traditional cottage hold moisture which causes slight dampness during periods of wet weather
  • The cottage-style staircase is steep and a handrail is provided
  • The driveway to this property is short and steep, with a couple of tight bends making it possibly unsuitable for low-suspension vehicles
  • There is a dressing room off the landing, which could be used as a bedroom for a baby as there's room for a cot
  • If you are thinking of bringing a kayak, please contact us for more details. Please note, there is a steep ladder down into the water, and access to the river is across the main road, 100 metres from the cottage
  • Arrival: 16:00 onwards

  • 2 dogs allowed. Additional charges may apply

Great location, easily walkable to Ambleside. Road can be noisy at times but not bad. Good value for money, ticks all the boxes for a solid place to base yourself with your family &/or dog to then go & explore the great outdoors.

Lovely location and great views and walks from the door step. Cottage was OK as a base only to sleep, not comfortable or clean enough for self catering for a week, we eat out everyday due to lack of equipment and lack of cleanliness

Great location. Cottage has everything you need and is kept very well. The underfloor heating downstairs is very efficient and keeps everywhere nice and warm. Cottage is well situated to go to some beautiful places around the lakes.

This was a fantastic find. A very cosy cottage with all amenities provided. Great views and an excellent location...It might not be the most up to date cottage, but it proved to be one of the best cottages that I have stayed in at the Lake District. Walking straight from the door to Grasmere, Ambleside, Elterwater, Chapel Stile and Langdale...excelRead morelent location. Would definitely recommend Hide
