Overflowing with character, this beautifully-renovated former Victorian schoolhouse just outside Pooley Bridge is dotted with impressive original features, like its bell tower. Sleeping six people across three bedrooms, it’s the ideal detached, single-storey holiday home for families or groups of friends who want to get together to enjoy the best of the Lake District. Spend your days hiking at Aira Force Waterfall, exploring Lowther Castle or cruising Ullswater, and your evenings spotting red squirrels in the garden or warming your toes by the wood burner in the lounge.

Step into the lobby and you’ll find that it opens up into the spacious kitchen and a light and bright south-facing dining area. Cook up a storm for your loved ones and gather everyone together to eat around the dining table. After dinner, pour a glass of wine and head out into the garden to take in the views across the fields. If you’re lucky, you may spot a red squirrel. Or make your way to the lounge to slip onto a sofa and catch up on your favourite TV shows by the glow of the wood burner. When the day is done, there are three lovely bedrooms to choose from.

Spend an afternoon browsing the local shops in Pooley Bridge (0.5 miles), where you’re sure to find plenty of local fudge and gin. Stop off for afternoon tea in a traditional teashop or enjoy a pint in one of the village pubs. Alternatively, take a trip on one of the famous Ullswater Steamers, which have connected Pooley Bridge, Howtown, Glenridding and Aira Force for 160 years. You can even take your bikes on board if you want to check out the different bike routes around Ullswater. Take a trip to Rheged (5 miles), to explore the gallery, shops and creative spaces.

A lovely cottage in a lovely location. It needs some TLC and more attention to detail though.

A pleasant place for a holiday. Some maintenance is needed to the cottage to bring it up to a 5* standard. It is accessible for someone who has difficulty with stairs and needs a shower. It wouldn't suit someone who needs to use a wheelchair indoors.

Excellent holiday house - very well equipped and close to Pooley Bridge where there are some lovely pubs and coffee shops. It was perfect for our family arrangements- all on one level suitable for an elderly relative with mobility issues. Large driveway and garden . Extremely well equipped

Handy location with walks from the door and down to Pooley Bridge. A good inside space and big garden so easy to relax. It seemed a bit tired for a premium price, hence a lower rating for value for money, however that did no spoil our stay. Our favourite walks were to the Cockpit Stone Circle, from the door, up to Aira Force and over Gowbarrow FellRead more, and the classic steamer from Pooley to Howtown and walk to Glenridding to catch steamer back. Great coffee and cake in Verey's book store, Pooley. Hide

Wonderful, clean and well equipped single level property full of character. Lots of additional information provided for guest in folders which was very helpful and thoughtful. Great location close and walkable into Pooley Bridge but would need to be able bodied as no pavement and care walking on the road would be needed. Stunning location - excellent cottage with everything you could need. Fantastic to have a bathroom for every room - so convenient. I would not hesitate to return as the location again, is marvellous - walking distance into Pooley Bridge but so private. The ferry is hit and miss - we took the bus to Glenridding.
