A very warm welcome to this characterful gem nestled in Bampton in the gently rolling countryside of the Lowther Valley. It has been completely refurbished to bring it elegantly into the 21st century while making the most of its period features such as undulating floorboards, charming window seats and exposed beams.  It sits in a small complex of similar traditional cottages and sleeps up to four people in two beautifully decorated bedrooms and has a large garden with a wealth of fruit trees making a lovely treat for those lucky enough to be visiting when the fruits ripen.

Bampton is a tranquil village nestled in beautiful countryside just two miles from Haweswater at the eastern end of the Lake District National Park. It's one of the lesser visited areas of the national park making it wonderfully peaceful while being incredibly easy to get to from the M6. Haweswater is the most remote and arguably the most mysterious of the Lakes with an atmosphere all of its own. Due to its remote nature and lack of visitors this rugged, sheltered valley is a thriving haven for wildlife. The craggy terrain is well suited to peregrines and buzzards and frequently their cries are the only sounds breaking the silence. The valley is even home to its own herd of red deer. Even closer to the cottage red squirrels are frequently spotted, why not get a picnic together and potter down to Haweswater beck 150 metres away and spend the afternoon listening for wildlife and paddling in the stream?

Exploring the wider eastern Lake District couldn't be easier. The cottage is just 7 miles from beautiful Ullswater, widely thought of as the most picturesque of the Lakes. Here you can make the most of the wonderful range of walking on offer or enjoy being out on the water either under your own paddle power or aboard one of Ullswater's elegant steamers. Bampton Grange is also within very easy driving distance of Keswick, the Lake District's adventure capital. Here you can explore your wilder side with any number of outdoor activities or just enjoy this vibrant market town on foot.

On arrival at the property the main door leads directly into the kitchen/diner. It's a well-equipped room with dishwasher, microwave, fan oven, electric hobs, a washer dryer and all the crockery and utensils you might need for your stay. The kitchen has been completely replaced but it still retains all its original charm with a latched door and period style window. Venturing through the hallway you reach the living room which has two deep comfy sofas, a large TV with Freeview and a DVD. The owners have thoughtfully left a selection of DVD's and books to keep you entertained during your stay. This room is a period gem with marvellous old built in cupboards and gorgeous wooden window seats. Just the place to lose yourself in a Jane Austen novel.

Moving up the wide curved staircase you'll arrive at the wonderful master bedroom. This has been decorated in calm warm colours and has a king-size wooden bedstead, a large wardrobe and a wonderful wooden window seat for dreaming away your time and an en-suite shower room with a beautiful curved shower enclosure. The twin bedroom has the same lovely wooden bedroom furniture and dual aspect windows benefiting from gorgeous views over the rolling countryside and down to the river. The family bathroom is a lovely space with a large double ended bath and over bath shower, a perfect spot for soaking away tired muscles after your Lake District adventures.

Wandering outside you'll find a wonderfully large garden with multiple places to enjoy an al fresco meal or glass of wine, you'll also find the large shed where there is table football to keep the family amused as well as bags of space for locking away bikes and kayaks should you care to bring them. The garden has multiple fruit trees and bushes including redcurrants, blackberries, pears, plums and gooseberries to name but a few. If you're lucky enough to be visiting when the fruit ripens then you can enjoy them yourselves! Children will love the tree house as an ideal hiding place from the parents. Just a short stroll from the cottage brings you to the village common where there are football posts and more space to keep the children amused. Why not enjoy a morning cuppa or a sunset glass of wine while the children (or indeed the big kids) turn cartwheels on the lawn?

Iona is a beautiful traditional cottage in a stunning location. It is well equipped and meticulously maintained. My main reservation was that it allows dogs rather than truly welcomes them. Trying to manage the numerous restrictions made it impossible to truly relax and enjoy my holiday.

Really enjoyed our stay, its a beautiful cottage and comfortable. Perfectly positioned to enjoy the north of the Lake District with a short drive to Ullswater, Hadrians wall, Lowther castle and Keswick. A few electrical items didnt work but it didnt distract from our enjoyment. You have to have atleast one meal at the Marsdale Inn (book beforehand)Read more local pub with friendly locals and staff. Would love to stay here again. Hide

Lovely, quiet cottage in a very rural location. Well equipped kitchen, clean and comfortable. Good sized garden for dogs - although fenced it is not dog proof. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

Iona cottage is in a great location for walking and enjoying the local pub. It was spacious inside for four adults and three dogs, who also enjoyed the extensive garden.

Lovely cottage but smells very strongly of wet dog, including the bedding. Dog hair gets everywhere. Upstairs T.V will not support Netflix as too old, needs upgrading, handy for keeping kids occupied when raining. Information pack outdated needs refreshing. The cottage is nice but needs some TLC. Other properties in the same price band offer more. Read moreWe have stayed a few times but due to nearly doubling in price we have opted to try somewhere different next year. Iona Cottage is a great wee cottage for your base in the Lakes if you don't mind a bit of driving. It's also great if you just want to get away from it all. The cottage is great for dogs with huge enclosed garden and parking for two cars. It has all the amenities you need for your visit and nearby Shap has a Coop and dus and chip shop if you run ouRead moret of anything or fancy a takeaway. We also dined at the nearby Mardale Inn which is excellent. This was the third time we have stayed here. Hide

Amazing holiday! Iona cottage is very welcoming, well equipped with everything you need and very cosy. The garden was the main reason I chose the cottage for the dogs and it was beyond our expectations. We cannot fault our stay and very much look forward to revisiting again.

Fantastic cottage and location with a large garden which the dogs loved. The cottage itself is perfect for a break and is very quite and peaceful. Bampton is perfect location and many villages are accessible and easy to get to and enjoy days out. I would highly recommend
