A traditional Lakeland farmyard with ancient barns and outbuildings offers privacy and brings sense of history to your stay at this traditional country cottage. Situated next to a working dairy farm and surrounded by beautiful countryside, Nether House offers welcoming accommodation for up to nine people. There's a country-style kitchen, fabulous dining room and bright, comfortable sitting room with an open fire on the ground floor and five bedrooms and two bathrooms upstairs. Outside you'll find a large garden with seating areas in both front and back. Three dogs are welcome but please keep them on a lead around the neighbouring livestock.

The hamlet of Netherhouses enjoys a peaceful, rural location. Fells behind the house have some great walking, so lace up your walking boots and head out to explore. You’ll find incredible views west to the Duddon Estuary and the Isle of Man and east to Morecambe Bay and Levens Sands. The bustling market town of Ulverston is about a 5-minute drive away with lots of lovely independent shops as well as restaurants, pubs, cafes and an independent cinema.

Your closest lake is Coniston Water (closely followed by Windermere). Hike up the mighty Old Man of Coniston above the town, explore Grizedale Forest on the quieter east side of the Lake, wild swim or enjoy a cruise on the Steam Yacht Gondola if you prefer a more leisurely pace. Why not head south and spend a day on the coast? Enjoy a bracing coastal walk whilst taking in the stunning vistas out to sea, perfect for recharging the batteries. There are maps and guidebooks at the house to inspire local rambling.

As you’d expect from a country retreat, there’s a large boot room with a feature former fireplace and wonderful original slate floors. Complete with coat hooks and welly racks, this is the perfect spot to leave wet coats and muddy boots before continuing your journey into the rest of the house. Off the hallway is a handy utility room equipped with a full-sized washing machine and tumble dryer, as well as a useful ground floor WC. The bright kitchen is well equipped with the essentials for a self-catering holiday. In here you’ll find an electric oven and hob, microwave, toaster and kettle along with plenty of pots, pans and dishes to prepare and serve a feast. There’s also a free-standing slimline dishwasher for clearing up. An arch leads through to the dining room with its long pine table. Antique furniture offers a fantastic backdrop for convivial meals, and two large windows let in plenty of light and provide beautiful views out over the garden.

The charming sitting room is full of character. An inviting four-seater sofa, a high backed armchair and a pretty two-seater sofa are positioned in front of the open fire, perfect for cosy evenings in. There’s also a smart TV for entertainment. At the other end of the living room is another chintzy two-seater, a wing back chair and an upright piano. A glass door connects the room to the front lawn. Overlooking the garden, ornithologists will love watching the comings and goings of the wide variety of birds.

The five bedrooms can be found on the first floor, so head up the 17th century black oak panelled staircase to discover more of the house. The first bedroom you come to is a double room, overlooking the back garden and with a metal-framed bed. Opposite is another double room overlooking the back garden with a view down to Coniston Water. It’s a charming room with vernacular panelling, a classic metal bed frame and a pine chest of drawers. The third double room is next door. It is spacious with a beautiful antique double bed, an 18th century livery cupboard repurposed for modern living and a tiled Victorian fireplace. A cushioned window seat over looks the front garden with views to Morecambe Bay and, on a clear evening, the twinkling lights of Morecambe’s promenade. Further along the corridor are the two remaining bedrooms. The lovely twin room has matching vintage wooden single beds, a handy dresser and a beautifully painted ornate chest of drawers. Last but by no means least is the king-size bedroom. The bed is perfectly positioned to take full advantage of the stunning views from the large picture window - ideal for a morning brew with a view! This bedroom has its own en-suite bathroom with a WC, washbasin and corner bath.

Also on the first floor is the spacious family bathroom with a WC, washbasin and shower over the bath.

As well as having plenty of parking in the yard, the house sits in a wonderful garden. The garden gets the sun for most of the day, making it a delightful spot for some R&R. The large lawn areas are sure to be a hit with adults, children and dogs alike! There are also two different seating areas with outdoor tables, chairs and benches, perfect for al fresco dining and a selection of deck chairs for relaxing and afternoon naps. A wide variety of wildlife, from hedgehogs to barn owls, visit the garden so be sure to keep your eyes peeled for your animal neighbours enjoying the wildlife habitats. This is also a cycle rack which can hold up to 10 bikes and an EV charge point in the yard, available at no extra cost.

The property is located next to a working farm and there will be the usual comings and goings associated with a farmyard, including machinery and livestock. Indeed, a dairy herd of cows pass by the house to the neighbouring farm every day during spring and summer for milking. Please be sure to keep the gates to the house closed, to keep the cows out of the garden.

Huge enclosed garden and in quiet location. My 3 year old grandson had a whale of a time -looking for rabbits and other wildlife. Very quick drive to pubs & supermarkets around Ulverston. Heritage railway, Lakes Aquarium and Lakes ferries all very close, And to cap it all this property is 400 years old and always inhabited.

Overall the cottage is well equipped and in a nice location, and beds were comfortable. The lounge has an open fire which was lovely in the evenings and there were nice touches like plenty of dishwasher tablets and basics which many places don't give. It is very old (built c. 1600) so expect some of the things that come with that, creaky floors, stRead moreeps internally etc. We did find it too cold, which the owners were helpful and quick to respond to increasing the heating and water temperature. Lovely character cottage. Set in a beautiful rural setting. Lovely walks around the cottage. Would recommend Conaston Lake, less tourists, very tranquil setting, great walk up to the mines. Beds at the cottage were very comfortable, lots of seating, great open fire, loved sitting round the fire pit, plenty of equipment for cooking for 9 people.
