This charming holiday property is a character cottage in a superb position beneath Mallerstang Edge and Wild Boar Fell in the Eden Valley. It is located in a small hamlet called Outhgill on the quiet valley road that runs parallel to the River Eden and the Settle to Carlisle railway on the opposite side of the valley. Mallerstang is considered to be one of England’s last wildernesses and offers a tranquil, relaxing location for a holiday.

The property sleeps eight people in four bedrooms. The attic double bedroom benefits from an en-suite shower room and Velux windows. The cottage retains much of the original character including exposed beams and stone walls. The sitting room features a cosy wood burner and original stone walls. This room is open to a sunroom that benefits from several large windows looking over the garden and towards the spectacular fells.

Outhgill is a delightful hamlet set in the area where Cumbria and the Yorkshire Dales overlap, putting you in an ideal location to explore the Lakes and the Dales. The hamlet has a green and a sculpture by Andy Goldsworthy. Red squirrels are indigenous to the area and are often seen in the garden. Walking from the door of The Old Stables is outstanding; the narrow valley takes its name from Mallerstang Edge, a stunning craggy escarpment above the valley. The peaceful environs of Mallerstang and the upper Eden Valley offer varied walking in a beautiful location. The scenic Carlisle to Settle railway line runs parallel with Mallerstang Edge on the opposite side of the valley. There are regular steam services and guests at the property can join the service at Kirkby Stephen further up the valley.

This character cottage has a large entrance hall and accommodation over three floors. Off the entrance hall is a recently fitted kitchen with granite work surfaces, a separate utility and downstairs cloakroom.

The dining room opens to the sitting room. It retains character features including an exposed stonewall and has a dining table for eight people. The sitting room has a multi-fuel stove and exposed stone work. The cottage has been sympathetically extended to provide a garden room linking the living room with the kitchen.

Upstairs are two double bedrooms and one twin room, all with pleasant views and a large family bathroom with a roll-top bath, separate shower cubicle, WC and wash basin.

A spiral staircase leads to the master bedroom in the converted attic. The loft has been converted into a Master bedroom suite with a large double bedroom, full of character with exposed beams and trusses, a walk in wardrobe and en-suite shower room.

Outside there is a garden to the rear with a large lawn and mature borders and a small cottage garden at the front of the property. There is a gravel parking area for one car and further parking in front of the cottage. There are lovely views and walks to Mallerstang Edge and Wild Boar Fell.

Very nice cottage - plenty of space. Beds very comfy - but the real highlight - the views were unbelievable - in every direction. Good outside space - dog proof.

Whilst the cottage was relatively clean, it was tired in places.

We had a lovely few days over New Year at the Old Stables. We were a party of six adults and two dogs and we had plenty of room and the house was very cosy and well equipped. It's great to have the additional fridge in the utility room and a full freezer in the kitchen is also a bonus when you have a few to cater for! The location is fabulous - eveRead moren in December/January when we had some awful rain, the scenery is spectacular and great for dog walks (with care for sheep in the fields). Hide

Lovely spacious house in a beautiful setting. Lots of extra touches to make it welcoming, like books, games, puzzles etc and a bbq. The WiFi was excellent and the smart TV made good use of it! Kitchen well stocked with utensils etc and two modern ovens made cooking easy. We all loved the sun room at the back. Would definitely recommend.
