It was lovely to be back at the Heights of Winder again. We know how gorgeous the location is and how cosy the Shepherd's hut is but we are still equally charmed each time we visit! The shepherd's hut was clean and comfortable and had everything we needed. We cooked in the hut a few times during our week's stay...vegetable curry, spaghetti bolognaiRead morese from scratch and heated up pasta bake and pizza. As long as you are organised, you can cook most things. There is a decent sized fridge and some nooks and crannies for other food storage. We knew from the past that there is no freezer, just a small ice box but we managed to fit a couple of small bits in there. The shower is good and shampoo/body wash and conditioner are supplied along with soap and shower caps if needed. There are so many little touches that show the thought and care that Helen and Richard put into the hut. There was plenty of tea and coffee and some milk and fresh eggs and biscuits as well as bits and pieces you might need for cooking, like spray oil etc. Everything had been thought about! There is a hairdryer provided as well as a torch, a washing line and pegs and countless other little helpful items. But...the best part of the hut itself is the bed. It is big and comy and so very cosy. The TV is set up in the bed area so you can watch TV in bed but you might like to just stare out of the door of the hut and watch what is going on out there instead! You can access your iplayer, Netflix , Prime video etc on the TV so remember to bring your passwords! The hot tub is wonderful. The bubbls are fun but it is also wonderful to just lie in the tub and watch the birds flying around or the chickens that like to come and visit or the lambs in the field or just gaze at the majextic Howgills and the incredible views all around. The owners of the hut are friendly and really want you to have a great time. They live in the farmhouse down the track from the hut so they are around if you need them but are never intrusive. The position of the hut is idyllic. We went on some gorgeous walks from the door...the highlights were walking up Winder, Arrant Haw, the Calders and the Calf from the door and also the gorgeous valley walk from Sedbergh along two rivers to the viaduct and then up through fields back to the hut. Sedbergh is a few minutes' drive away but it is also a nice walk...we prefer to climb up onto the fell and walk along before dropping into Sedbergh. We had a couple of windy/rainy days during our week but there are places to visit when the weather is not good for a walk....Fairfield Mill was interesting and the cafe was lovely but there are many other places within a short drive. We were also happy to just chill and read in the hut, which feels warm and safe whatever is going on outside!! Kendal has several large supermarkets and the Spar in Sedbergh stocks most everyday things. We enjoyed the cafes in Sedbergh and Sunday lunch in the Red Lion and a takeaway from Eastern Balti in Kendal. The fish and chip van that comes to Sedbergh on a Tuesday (at the time of writing) is very welcome after a long hike. Well, I think that's quite enough for a review...the place is amazing...we keep coming back. There are no downsides. Book for the full week, you won't regert it. Just please don't book the week we want to book on our next visit!!!! We will definitely be back! Hide
