A traditional stone house, this former post office in the pretty Lakeland village of Rosthwaite, is an ideal base for a family or friends to explore the glorious Lake District. Sleeping four guests, this characterful property is set in the Borrowdale Valley, with lovely views of the surrounding fells. The village is less than 4 miles from beautiful Derwentwater and has a year-round bus service to Keswick (6.5 miles). It also boasts a restaurant, tearoom and farm shop.

The front door of this ground-floor apartment opens to a cosy lounge with stylish sofas, a wood burner set in a brick hearth and a window seat where you can enjoy a view of trees and fells. A door leads to the simple white and wood kitchen/diner. There are two bedrooms: a double, reached from the kitchen and a super-king-size, accessed from the hall. Wooden floors, pine cottage doors and a traditional tiled floor in the hall enhance the charming interior. You can park your bikes in cycle storage racks inside the enclosed, shared courtyard.

Rosthwaite is the starting point of many wonderful walks and cycle routes, with the fells on your doorstep. Take the packhorse trail to the picture-postcard hamlet of Watendlath and have a reviving drink at the National Trust tearoom. You can explore more lovely walks on a circular boat tour of Derwentwater. It stops at eight jetties, where you can hop on or off to visit must-see landmarks such as the Lodore Falls, picnic on small, secluded beaches or enjoy a wild swim. Keswick is a lively market town where you can see a show at Theatre by the Lake, play crazy golf in Hope Park or visit the famous Pencil Museum.

Lovely quint cottage with character in a wonderful area of the lakes if you like walking/hiking or just a really quiet retreat. There isn't much to do though other than this without a 6 mile slow drive back to Keswick. The cottage is obviously aimed at people accompanied with a dog. Just be aware that you will have to get fully dressed each time tRead moreo take the dog out for toilet breaks as no garden for this purpose, there is a small courtyard at the back but shared with others so you can hardly let your dog go out there. The parking is poor. It's offered up as 3 parking spaces but in reality it's 2 I can assure you and first come first serve, we ended up paying 35 to park elsewhere. If you have young children and of course dogs please be aware that this cottage literally opens on to the main road, which on the pictures looks like a quite lane, in reality this is actually a very busy road with some dead space that you can't see at the door. It's actually quite dangerous and you need to have your wits about you. Please be careful. Hide

The Old Posthouse is a wonderful place in which to be fully immersed in the best bit (in our opinion!) of The Lake District. You can feel the Borrowdale history all around you: inside the cottage, around the village & out on the packhorse trails all around the surrounding fells. The heating is operated from elsewhere & we were cold initially, but tRead morehe housekeeper was quick to alert the owners who, at our request, left the heating on constant, transforming our holiday. We would love to return! Hide

Kitchen window brought in swarms of small flies, and supplies were minimal: one thin toilet roll per room for the whole stay, four dishwasher tablets, a part-used kitchen roll, and one bin bag. For the high price, the accommodation felt neglected and poorly managed. Would not recommend. A very comfortable cottage in stunning scenery. A great location for walkers being surrounded by footpaths, including the Coast to Coast path. Easily accessible by car and with a frequent bus service from the bus stop just a few steps away.

We had a lovely time at the Old Posthouse. It's in a beautiful location with so many great walks from right outside the door without the need for a car, and with a pub next door, and a cafe just up the road. The cottage was very clean, comfortable and cosy. We had a problem with one of the showers but the owner drove all the way up from London on ERead moreaster Sunday so that he could fix it. Unbelievably fantastic service. Communication was also excellent. We would love to return. Hide

We had a great holiday. The apartment was very comfortable and well maintained. The location is perfect if you want to walk, with many accessible paths from the village. For longer walks or if you want to leave the car parked up, there is a good bus service. We had a wonderful holiday and we were lucky to be blessed with perfect weather. The BorrowRead moredale valley and the Lakes is a beautiful area. Hide

This cottage is in a great location, its clean, the kitchen is well equipped for simple cooking, the showers are hot and the bedrooms are comfortable. On the downside, the common areas were a little small for 4 people, it was very cold when we arrived, and a leak in one en-suite sink made it unusable. We reported the leak the day we arrived, but itRead more wasnt fixed during our 6-night stay (which included a bank holiday, but also three working days) and we received no updates. Hide

A very convenenient locaton enabling access in several directions for a variety of walks, and the use of the very frequent bus, including over Honister Pass. The passing traffic right outside the door was not intrusive and was mainly during day light hours.
