Property code: OC-SZ039

This is wonderful place to stay, stuffed full of treasures, antiques and knick-knacks, standing proudly in the upper part of the Newlands Valley with beautiful, uninterrupted views of the Newlands valley and fells. The Newlands Valley is an excellent location for walkers. It offers some of the best ridge walks in the Lake District. Height is gained quickly and there are several outstanding horseshoe walks in the valley including the Dale Head and Coledale horseshoes. It is also a superb base for cyclists as the Newlands Pass offers several exciting hairpin bends and testing hills. It forms a circuit with the Whinlatter Pass or a longer circuit with Honister Pass providing thrilling road cycling and magnificent scenery. There is one pub in the valley; a traditional pub serving good food and beer. The outside bar allows you to admire the view whilst supping a pint. There are also pubs in the villages of Braithwaite (3.5 miles) and Buttermere.(3 miles). Keswick is a short drive away (5 miles) boasting plenty of pubs, shops, cafes and restaurants. Keswick also has an art deco cinema and a theatre.

Life at this cottage centres around the main room on the ground floor. Here there are sofas arranged around the main focal point, the open fire. There are other quieter areas - a smaller seating area in the alcove by one of the windows which has fantastic, uninterrupted views over the surrounding fells. Another small gathering place with seating arranged in a curve is by one of the entrance doors, again with beautiful views. Those with musical talent will be able to entertain themselves, and others, on the various keyboard instruments around the room including a piano, harpsichord and small church organ. Towards the end of the room is the dining table - a great place for doing a jigsaw or for family/group meals seating nine to ten people comfortably. Beyond the dining area is the kitchen area which is equipped with electric oven and hob, dishwasher, large fridge/freezer and microwave. There is also a walk-in-larder with washer/drier. A separate toilet is beyond the kitchen.

The stairs from the main room lead to a corridor with four bedrooms. Three of these are doubles (one of which is on a raised platform and so is unsuitable if you have difficulties with mobility). In this bedroom there is also a handbasin. There is another room with three single beds. All the bedrooms have amazing views. There is a family bathroom which has bath with electric shower over and sink. There is an additional separate toilet. Finally, there is a shower room with an electric shower - although please note that this is very small.

Outside is a south-facing gravelled terrace - the perfect place for al fresco dining. There is half an acre of grounds to explore and then countless walks leading off in different directions. Parking by the house for up to five cars.

A character property in an idyllic location. It suited our family group very well. We were very lucky with the weather, but there was ample space for everyone inside. Careful catering is essential - the nearest shop is a good 15 minutes drive away. The fridge/freezer are a good size.

As a group of 9 walkers, foodies, and board-game players, we love Aikin and will keep booking it as long as it remains available.

Charming, attractive cottage in the most beautiful location imaginable. Comfortable beds and good bed linen, spacious sitting room ( not quite enough comfortable chairs) and very well equipped kitchen. Lovely wood fire made it very cosy in the evenings. Beautiful wood furniture and lovely interesting pictures. An unusual and lovely place to stay buRead moret you have to not mind the somewhat inadequate bathroom/ shower facilities. Hide

The cottage was quaint and the furnishings interesting but the lack of adequate maintenance of organ and harpsichord made them unusable. The location was good and the wildlife was fascinating. The outdoor furniture was poor particularly the tables. Not all beds were comfortable. Kitchen and equipment were good. Shower was certainly tiny (we managedRead more without it) but the toilets were too, particularly one (we couldnt manage without them!) Hide

The cottage is beautifully furnished, well equipped, and in an excellent location. It's such a privilege to step out of the front door and straight into the beauty and the fun. It's obviously a much loved property and I hope lots of people get to enjoy it.

Large cottage perfect for our family get together. The large downstairs living space was ideal to spread out and enjoy a place with lots of character. Close to both short and long fell walks with beautiful views and star gazing on clear nights. Well equipped kitchen with plenty of utensils, pots and pans.

Unusual cottage in a stunning setting. Warm, with an open log fire. There is a piano, organ and a harpsicord! 4 large bedrooms upstairs with comfortable beds, one with a sink. Kitchen is well equipped, but I dislike electric hobs and I couldn't get the grill to work- possibly my fault. The drive in from Braithwaite seems longer than the 4 miles, buRead moret it is such a beautiful valley. Hide

Beautiful location, stunning views from the house. The house was very quirky! Plenty of space, although the toilet and shower room were very small indeed. Comfy beds and good quality bedding. Superb appliances, plenty of crockery etc.

Fantastic place to stay! I highly recommend it for large groups or families. The stunning natural surroundings and the presence of sheep add to its charm. The location is also perfect for exploring the Lake District.
