Retreat to this gorgeous Cumbrian haven on the fringes of the North Pennines. Sleeping four guests and set within attractive old stables, the two-bedroom, character property still presents an abundance of original features, from revealed stone walls to beautiful oak beams. Venture out to explore the Eden Valley. Plan day trips into the Lake District, 12 miles away. Return to the tranquillity of the cottage to bask in the sunshine and enjoy the scenery in the very generous, shared garden.

Arrive at this rural retreat and make your way inside to unpack the delicious Cumbrian provisions you have bought on your excursions. Find yourselves in a beautifully renovated, open-plan lounge/kitchen/diner. This cosy and inviting space is where you and your party can relax together after your busy days out. Light the wood burner in here on chilly days or throw open the French windows when the weather is fine. Find a good film to watch on the TV. Venture over to the kitchen to prepare a tasty meal. Play cards here too or head over to the comfortable seating for a few rounds of charades before bed. When you are ready to turn in for the night, make your way upstairs to either the double bedroom or the twin. The family bathroom is also here. Wander out into the mature, shared garden with your first cup of coffee of the morning. Have lunch out here too on fine days. Find ample parking at the cottage.

Pull on your walking boots, pack a backpack and strike out just over 4 miles to climb Cross Fell. Venture 10 miles into Penrith to potter in the shops. Drive 14.5 miles for a day out in Pooley Bridge, in the Lake District, or catch an Ullswater Steamer to absorb the magnificent scenery from the water.

If you're after a get away from it all holiday then Kirkhall Cottages is for you. At the end of a single track lane, there is no traffic noise just the soothing sounds of birds and sheep. Nick and Anna are so accommodating, nothing is too much trouble. The gardens have badminton and croquet, and with a hammock and 2 tree swings there is plentyRead more to do with plenty of space to find your own piece of tranquility. The views are stunning, with vistas to the distant Lake District peaks and Great Dun Fell close by. There is an EV charger, which is very convenient. We all felt so relaxed when we left, and didn't really want to leave at all. Hide

A really comfortable cottage in a beautiful and peaceful location close to the Lakes. It feels like home. The hosts are really helpful. The fresh home baked bread was a lovely surprise and it was great to be able to buy eggs laid by their hens. We will be back!

A warm welcome on arrival, and thanks for the home made bread. Ascent of Cross Fell completed - turn right on leaving the Stables, and keep going.

A great place for a superb stay below Cross Fell. The cottage was very comfortable and clean, we had everything we needed. Great walking straight from your front door, away from the crowds ideal for a peaceful break or as a base to explore other surrounding areas. We would highly recommend. Thank you.

A return visit to Stables Cottage for us, our first visit with new owners Anna and Nick who couldn't have been more helpful or welcoming. Nick and Anna went out of their way to be helpful in accommodating our needs. We needed a longer stay for commercial reasons and we could not have asked for more. The cottages were clean and well equipped and Nick and Anna gave us superb hospitality.
