Rest and recharge at this superb property dating back to the 1700s; it's an ideal choice for a gathering of family and friends seeking a tranquil base to explore the Lake District. The centre of Ambleside is just 0.5 miles away, where you can browse the shops and discover many eateries. Walk to Stock Ghyll Force waterfall from the town, or for a longer hike, follow the historic 'Coffin Route' to Grasmere. You can take a scenic Lake cruise from Ambleside Waterhead Pier, which is a mile away. Enjoy walks at Rydal Cave, Tarn Hows, Latterbarrow, or Brockhole on Windermere; the gateway activities on the lake are all within 5 miles. Further afield, spend the day cycling the many trails in the beautiful Grizedale Forest, or head for a leisurely trip on the Haverthwaite Steam Railway, both of which are within 15 miles of the property.

You'll love this splendid property, set over three levels, which blends contemporary styling with exquisite classic furnishings. From the moment you step inside, you'll appreciate the wonderful attention to detail and the charming original features. Accessed via a footbridge from the parking area, the entrance is at the rear and leads into a stone-flagged snug with exposed beams and a games room with a pool table – a great space to spend an evening. One of the flagstones even bears an inscription noting that none other than Bonnie Prince Charlie rested here! Head up to the first floor, where you'll find the main living space, one of several exceptional social spaces. The living area is light and airy, traditionally furnished with deep, cushioned sofas for unwinding, arranged around a cosy wood burner. Here, you can enjoy catching up over afternoon tea or gather with a drink to watch your favourite programmes on the Smart TV. The beautiful, large dining space is an invitation to linger over family feasts or celebratory dinners. The contemporary kitchen has all the appliances necessary to make meal preparation simple during your stay. On the top floor are three delightful bedrooms: one king-size with an en-suite shower room, and two twin rooms sharing a stylish bathroom with a deep bath, separate shower cubicle, and WC. All the bedrooms feature characterful exposed wooden beams and ample storage.

Outside, there is a lovely, shared garden with a lawn and seating area, making this the ideal spot to relax with a drink and enjoy the soothing sights and sounds of the River Rothay, including the local wildlife. Secure storage for sports equipment is available, and there's private parking for three cars. You can access the river right from the door, and anglers with an Environmental Agency rod licence valid between 15th March and 30th September can enjoy casting a line for their supper.

The property is in a fantastic spot on the river and it was a treat to be so close to the centre and yet so quiet too. There are great walks on the doorstep and I even had chance to do a spot of fishing on the river thanks to a rod and spinners supplied. (Just had to buy a rod license). We took two dogs and they loved the enclosed garden. We were aRead more lot less stressed because they wouldn't cross the footbridge which takes you from the property to the carpark area. The snooker/pool table was a fantastic idea and we used it as a family, it was great for us all to be together and play games there. The kitchen, bedrooms and bathroom were great. There was lots of room for all of us, dive adults and two dachshunds. There is a bit of an unsightly area behind the lodge but that can't be helped as it's between the property and the ambulance station. It didn't detract from our stay. We didn't know but you do share the garden with other occupants of the other adjoining places. Luckily all our dogs got on, so there was no dramas. There should be a proper rechargeable torch there because on the first night we had a badger come straight over the bridge and we had the dogs out in the garden! Luckily I had a torch on my phone to see it coming! The torch there is a wind up one and it didn't work. Wildlife is lovely, that badger (obvs) bats, herons, fish, owls, lots of birds. Loved it. 5 stars we would live there easily! Thanks. Hide

Lovely quiet location next to the river. Everything clean and tidy and virtual hamper was a lovely touch. The warm boot room was great to leave coats etc. Short walk to Ambleside centre and to the Lake. Probably could do with more sockets in one of the bedrooms but the beds were comfortable and plenty of wardrobe/cupboard space. Thank you. We have had a great week. Kids (18 and 19) joined us for their first trip to the Lakes since they could walk. Boyfriend came as well. Cottage was perfect for space and being cosy. We all enjoyed the fire and everyone (surprisingly including the wife) enjoyed the snooker or pool. Ambleside was a perfect few mins walk in. Kids could pop toRead more the pub and Michelle and I enjoyed the morning walk to find a different coffee place each morning. When the kids got up we all enjoyed great walks across the area and out to Keswick.....Cat Bells the highlight. It was misty every day but still amazing to be back here especially at this time of year with the amazing autumn colours. Thank you Hide

Our 3rd stay at Riverside Lodge, It is spotless & very well serviced. Michelles added many extras. Superb amenities e.g. large drying room, fantastic Snooker/Pool table in excellent condition, 2 lounges both with wood burning stoves (fab, all very spacious rooms so that 6 guests have room to spread or be together, lots of games. We echo other guestRead mores i.e. privacy window covering, although serves one purpose, does obscure great views beyond, which is a pity. Heating system is amazing & so generous (the number of radiators & Hive time settings) - there is more than ample heating in every room, even on the half landing between ground & 1st floors. In fact even with the radiators turned off & windows open, we found it too hot during the night. Virtual welcome pack is a great idea. On-site parking, excellent directions & lovely gardens next to river - even herons. Great location - a few minutes walk to the centre of Ambleside. Hide

Before we even booked we were given plenty of information to help us make the right choice of property to match our requirements as closely as possible. We found Lakeland Retreats to be very responsRead moreive and customer-focused They have a good local team and maintenance and housekeeping are expedited efficiently. The property matched its description and we thoroughly enjoyed our holiday. In an ideal world, there would be a better fridge with more storage space (especially for vegetables) as the existing one is old and not very roomy. We intend to book again with Lakeland Retreats.
