Property code: OC-LR082

Perched at the top of a hill in a historic area of Ambleside, this charming terraced cottage is perfectly configured for families, and would also suit a group of friends looking for a Lakeland escape. Just a few hundred metres away, the centre of town is brimming with interesting shops, cafes, bars and restaurants. For a quirky photograph, don't miss the tiny Bridge House, a 17th century property built over Stock Beck. For the adventurous, there are a large selection of outdoor activities available in the immediate area, from hiking and climbing to wild swimming and water sports. The walking is, of course, superb, whether you want a wander around Lake Windermere (1 mile), or head further into the fells. From Ambleside's Waterhead Pier you can cruise the lake, while within 1.5 miles you can reach Stagshaw Gardens, Ambleside Roman Fort and the Stock Ghyll Force waterfall.

Full of character, the cottage is traditionally furnished for a real taste of Lakeland life. A small, covered entrance porch leads into the hallway, with the lounge off to the right. An open fire is the heart of this room, surrounded by comfortable seating and with a Smart TV for streaming your favourite shows. To the left of the hallway is a spacious kitchen/diner, with oak cabinets wrapped in granite surfaces and equipped with a good range of appliances, including a microwave. A dining table sits at far end of this room, by the window looking down towards Smithy Brow – a great place to enjoy a family brunch or evening meal together. There is direct access to the garage from the kitchen (one step up). A handy utility, with laundry facilities, completes the ground floor. A curved staircase leads to the first floor, where you'll find a choice of four spacious bedrooms, all with ample storage: a double, a twin and two singles. They share a bathroom with a bath and separate shower – ideal for those who love long soaks or quick rinses. There's a separate WC adjacent.

For fresh air and sunshine, perhaps with a morning coffee or a sundowner, there's a small patio at the back of the cottage, shared by three properties and reached via a few steps. As for parking, there is room in the garage for one small car (alternatively, this is a useful space for storing bikes and other outdoor gear), or directly outside on the street (subject to availability).

  • 4 bedrooms – 1 double, 1 twin, 2 singles
  • 1 bathroom with bath and shower
  • 1 separate WC
  • Electric oven and hob, microwave, fridge, freezer
  • Utility with washing machine and tumble dryer
  • Travel cot available
  • Open fire
  • Smart TV in the lounge
  • Please accompany your dog at all times in the shared garden and clean up any mess
  • Shared patio area with bench seating (reached via steps – please take care when wet)
  • Parking for 1 small car in the garage
  • Shop, pub and restaurant all within 0.5 miles
  • Storage for bikes and outdoor gear in the garage
  • Arrival: 16:00 onwards
  • Departure: before 10:00

The house was clean, very cosy and very well equipped. It's in a great location and we really appreciated having the garage plus the parking in front of the house. It was a lovely place for us to spend family time together and we will return here again. Lakeland Retreats phoned to let us know we could arrive early which was appreciated.

The location is perfect. Just a few steps to the best pub in The Lake District, The Golden Rule! If you are mountain bikers, the place has an incredible garage, a parking spot right outside too, so you can leave ad up and get out easily! It's just perfect. It could be decorated a bit nicer but then the price would be a lot less nice!!! Lanty SleeRead more is also a great spot but no garage!!!! Hide

The location of the property is excellent - very convenient and close to everything. The interior has an old-style charm, with traditional furniture and home dcor that gives the place a cozy, vintage feel. However, the cleanliness was disappointing. The cleaning could be improved significantly, as the rooms and common areas (especially kitchen and Read moregarage) were not as well-kept as expected. Hide

Very impressive cottage from the outside with lovely sash windows. Managed to park our Vitara car in garage a few times, if no space outside. Quite busy with other cars, and house is at the top of a steep hill, but only a 5 minute walk down into town. Found it to be a clean, older homely place. Reminded me of my elderly relatives house with the decRead moreor, and nice to read the history of the cottage. Beds were very comfortable, and nice to hear the sound of the river nearby, and the church bells at one point. Handy to have two separate toilets, upstairs and downstairs, but they are in a small space, and the shower cubicle is on the small size too. Plenty of hot water, and good WiFi. Kitchen appliances were fine. Hob worked well, didn't use the oven for once! Fridge is situated under the kitchen counter, so a bit lower down. There is an area outside for the cottage in a shared garden up some steps for your use. Thank you for letting us stay, and it has inspired my son to visit the area again with all the walks available. Just such a great location. Views from every window, quiet location, walks from the door yet a stones throw from centre of Ambleside. Cottage has everything you need to comfortably accommodate 6 people and the garage/ guaranteed parking space in front of it is another big bonus, as parking can otherwise be a bit of a lottery.
