Property code: OC-LR073

Brimming with history and charm, this characterful 17th-century cottage enjoys a central location in bustling Ambleside. The property makes a welcoming base for small groups and friends wishing to explore the South Lakes. A level 0.5-mile stroll leads you to the shores of Windermere, where you can book day or evening cruises to absorb spectacular scenery from the water. Ambleside's shops, restaurants, bars, and cinema are also all within a 0.5-mile radius, as well as tennis, mini-golf and an indoor climbing wall. Keen walkers and cyclists will be spoilt for choice with routes starting straight from the doorstep, and nature lovers can head to Stock Ghyll Force waterfall (1 mile) or explore the colourful woodland setting of National Trust Stagshaw Gardens (1 mile).

On arrival, step down from road level into the entrance hallway, where you can leave your coats and walking gear before heading through to the gorgeous beamed sitting room. Here, comfortable leather sofas, a quiet reading nook and a wood burner-effect gas fire create a wonderfully cosy atmosphere for unwinding after a day out. Head along the hallway and up a step to the kitchen/diner, a sociable space with everything you need for self-catering. A separate laundry area houses the washer/dryer, and there's a ground-floor shower room for extra practicality. Upstairs are two inviting bedrooms – a double and a spacious twin – both with original exposed beams and traditional cottage styling. The fully tiled bathroom features a powerful shower over a P-shaped bath, so you can freshen up in comfort.

When the weather's nice, take drinks and meals out to the rear courtyard patio, complete with table and chairs and glimpses of the nearby fell range. Although there is no private parking at the property, a permit is provided for one car in the nearby public car parks (150 metres). This is also valid across the South Lakeland area, making day trips more straightforward.

  • 2 bedrooms – 1 double, 1 twin

We have stayed at hazelnut cottage many times. It's perfect for our needs and we're made to feel so welcome. The location is great, it has a handy lobby for boots and rainy coats, and a second shower and toilet. We look forward to our fifth visit!

We have just come back from a wonderful week at Hazelnut Cottage! We felt at home straight away there, brilliant location and very comfortable house. Had a lovely patio at the back with all the evening sunshine too! We've been to Ambleside before and the cottage is right in the heart of it, short walk to shops, pubs, restaurants and so close to theRead more beautiful waterfalls and great walks! We are looking forward to staying again already! Hide

This is the second time we have stayed in this cottage and we love it. The location is perfect and it has everything we need for a lovely family break. The complimentary bottle of wine on arrival is a nice touch as is the board game box and book shelf. The terrace is a sun trap that we got to use lots this year as we were lucky with the weather. ThRead moree downstairs toilet and shower is useful too. Kitchen is well equipped and bathroom is large with a powerful shower. My son and I are allergic to dogs and this property is dog free which is actually quite hard to find at the Lakes. There is no parking space at the cottage but we just find a space nearby with the parking permit. The only other thing that would make it better would be a king sized bed in the main room rather than a double but that is just preference. Hide
