Light the wood burner here, help yourself to a deep-cushioned seat and settle in for the evening. Wander on down to the kitchen/diner end of the room, where the understated, sophisticated colour scheme continues. Prepare tasty meals, then gather around the farmhouse table to dine in style together. Also downstairs are a handy utility room and WC. Dovedale is a beautifully presented cottage in the centre of Ambleside but down a quiet road. It was well equipped and a lovely house to stay in. We were able to stop in the road to drop off luggage and parked in the nearby car park with the permit provided. Very close to all the shops and cafes. My friend and I stayed at Dove cottage, Ambleside from September 6th to September 9th 2024. It was our first trip to the picturesque Lake district village and our trip was made all the more pleasant by the 5 star amenities Dove cottage has to offer. The spacious and tastefully decorated cottage is spread over three levels and could cater for up toRead more six guests. The living room is cosy, comfortable with a fully equipped kitchen featuring high end appliances such as Smeg. Upstairs is a roomy bathroom and shower, a double bedroom and a large double room with ensuite bathroom. Up one more level to a converted attic with two single beds and wonderful views of Ambleside and the green majestic hills. Cafes, shops, restaurants are all situated nearby and lake Windermere is a pleasant 20 minute walk from the cottage. We could not have been more comfortable and Dove cottage is definitely our first choice to stay when we return to Ambleside next year. Hide

We love Ambleside but unfortunately wouldn't return to Dovedale. The property is fairly tired after a clearly busy summer, and there were 3 or 4 really annoying maintenance issues (some of which had been reported & ignored previously). There was also no parking pass & the communication from Lakeland retreats was poor, and instead of asking us to bRead moreuy a week of parking, they insisted we bought it in 3 day periods to allow them to make a saving, so we had 3 days of getting up with a baby before 8am to go and pay for parking in the rain. Raised the issues afterwards and they were brushed off with 'we hope it won't happen again and we will tell the owner'. Other things to note is there won't be a single bit of firewood, shower gel or soap in the house, and all the glassware is a huge random mix. These things are never expected, but a nice touch we have seen almost everywhere we stay, especially at a premium price. We strongly recommend Ambleside, but would avoid Dovedale next time we visited. Response from Lakeland Retreats Thank you for your honest feedback, and letting other guests know they will need to provide their own firewood and toiletries. As noted in the 'Layout & access' section above, wood can be bought locally so you don't need to transport it far. While we do feel we were reactive to the complaints you made, both regarding the maintenance issues when you brought them to our attention, and the parking problem which was both unforeseen and out of our control, we understand how disappointing it can be to have problems arise during a holiday. For the parking, you seemed happy with the work around at the time. Our suggestion of a 3 day pass was in the hope that we would secure the original parking permit within that time. As, despite our best efforts, we were unable to re-acquire the original permit, we apologies again for the knock on affect of you needing to secure additional parking time. We hope the reimbursement of all costs has gone some way to make up for this issue. We're sorry not to have met your standards on this occasion. We hope you'll consider staying with us again and, if you have any concerns before you book, we're always happy to take your call. Hide

Had a wonderful few days at Dovedale which is fantastically located. Walking distance to all restaurants/pubs and shops. Beautiful house, clean and spacious but felt warm and cosy. A real home from home. Plenty of hot water for baths and showers after long days walking the fells. We would definitely stay there again

Great location, in the middle of Ambleside. Kitchen is very well appointed. Parking is off site but manageable. The property shows a few signs of wear and tear is managed by an agent but this is expected for such a central and popular location.
