It’s the start of some particularly scenic local walks and is also home to a couple of pubs so you can enjoy a pre-dinner pint after long days out.

Hadrian’s Wall itself is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, stretching coast to coast across northern England and packed with atmospheric Roman history as well as seriously dramatic views. For an easy day out, the market town of Brampton (10.5 miles) has a great choice of independent shops, cafés and places to eat when you fancy a potter about (and a well-earned treat). Haltwhistle (7.5 miles) is another good bet.
