  • Fantastic gate lodge set within picturesque grounds
  • Spacious family retreat
  • Perfect spot to explore the Lake district and Yorkshire Dales
Property code: OC-78605

This charming gate lodge within the grounds of a stately home, is ideal for families who want to get out and enjoy the great outdoors. Surrounded by unbridled countryside, it is nestled between the Lake District National Park, the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the Yorkshire Dales National Park, so there is plenty of beautiful scenery to explore. Despite its secluded position, the historic market town of Kirkby Stephen is less than 1 mile away with many independent shops and eateries tucked away amongst its cobbled streets.

Although its interior is relatively modern, the property has retained some original features which are a reminder of its heritage. On entering, find yourself in the lounge where there is a wood burner, so you’re guaranteed cosy nights in during the winter months. Down a few steps, there’s an alternative entrance and the vast kitchen/diner. One of the single bedrooms is on the ground floor, whereas the king-size room is accessed via the single room on the first floor. A family bathroom completes the accommodation. Outside, there’s a large shared lawn and a private patio with dining furniture.

A quieter alternative to other towns in the Lake District or the Yorkshire Dales, the Cumbrian town of Kirkby Stephen is a good base from which to explore the area. There are a wealth of walking and cycling routes nearby, including Wainwright’s Coast to Coast that passes through. Should you want to visit one of the larger towns, you have Carlisle and Penrith to the north and Kendal to the south, all of which boast a range of shops, eateries and amenities and are worth the longer drive (25-50 miles).

  • 2 Bedrooms - 1 king-size zip-and-link with Smart TV (which can be made into a 2ft 6 twin on request) and a twin room situated on the ground floor
  • 1 Bathroom with shower over bath and WC and a ground floor shower room with shower and WC
  • Wood burner (first basket of logs included)
  • Electric oven and hob, microwave, fridge/freezer and washing machine/dryer
  • Off-road parking for 2 cars
  • Enclosed garden area with picnic bench
  • Shop and pub within walking distance
  • Smart TV in the lounge
  • This property will be decorated for Christmas
  • Arrival: 16:00 onwards
  • Departure: before 10:00
  • 3 dogs allowed. Additional charges may apply

Great location, loads of room, and clean. The dcor is dated and has a few issues expected with a listed building, but do not let that stop you visiting if your main reason to stay is to explore the area. Close to the local shops but far enough away for a quiet stay.

A great place. Felt comfortable and relaxed. Good facilities. Great views. Very spacious, being more than enough for 2 adults and a big dog, however was not able to let him out without a lead as the secure garden is behind the parking space. But enjoyed our early moring walks around the shared garden. Good local facilities. The lodge needs updatingRead more, but we will be returning. Hide

Ideally located, didnt bother reading reviews as like tp make my own mind up, lodge was spacious, clean and more than enough for 2 of us and a dog, dated and needs maintenance in some areas but not a negative review, most relaxing holiday we have had in a while and dog loved area and sleeping in her bed each night worn out from days activities.

This is a lovely property but does need a lot of maintenance to bring it up to standard. Positives: quirky cottage on three levels, listed building, set in its own parkland (this is the gatehouse to Stobars Hall, which is now a nursing home), lots of nature, peaceful surroundings. The cottage feels spacious but cosy. Negatives: some longstanding isRead moresues with the drains and bathrooms need addressing, ancient cooker. We really enjoyed our stay despite these issues. Hide

we were very disappointed with maintenance of the property, broken garage door left laying on the garden, leaves brushed to one corner so you couldn't walk up to the garden, upstairs and downstairs sinks blocked, shower not cleaned, wallpaper coming off the bathroom walls, baking trays disgusting and seen better days. when I mentioned it to the perRead moreson looking after the cottage the reply was what did you expect with the price you paid - 600 and to top it all off there's a very busy road Hide

Lovely location in the grounds of a beautiful hall with views to the Pennines and dales and the sounds of curlews in the day and owls at night. I captured the northern lights on camera . We saw rabbits and pheasants in the grounds but sadly no red squirrels although I believe they are present. Beds were comfy. Very spacious and multi level, which wRead moree liked. Two bathrooms. Two bedrooms -double and twin (pull out bed under single) a bit tired in places but didnt bother us. Easy access to the dales Hide

We had a very comfortable stay in this cozy cottage. The location was stunning and very close to the town and shops. As well as being a reasonable distance to the places in Yorkshire we wanted to go, Kirkby Stephen had some lovely walks of it's own. The house and interiors could do with some upkeep but it is wonderfully spacious.

Great little cottage just a short distance from the centre of the town. Had all the amenities needed for our stay. Added bonus of a secure area to exercise our dog. No issues with the spacious accommodation.

as above not much I can say, I have stayed in many cottages over a good few years, and to say I was disappointed and dismayed at the state of the property. Such a shame that it has been neglected over the years, and not befitting the beautiful architecture it befits.
