The village of Great Corby (0.5 miles) is on the opposite side of the river and reachable via a striking Victorian viaduct. This sweet holiday home is a lovely base for solo travellers and couples keen to explore Cumbria, sitting neatly between Hadrian’s Wall (14 miles) and the Lake District (within 20 miles).

This is a great spot for walkers, with a choice of scenic routes right on the doorstep. Take in viaduct views before heading down the famous ‘99 steps’ (0.5 miles) to follow the River Eden towards Wetheral Woods (1 mile). Along the way, look out for the impressive Cascade at Corby Castle and explore Constantine’s Cells tucked away within the woodland. The historic border city of Carlisle (3 miles) has excellent shopping, a 12th-century castle and a Grade I-listed cathedral you can visit.
