  • Charming 17th century cottage in a beautiful location near Ambleside
  • Modern styles blend seamlessly with period features throughout
Property code: OC-84633

Dating back to the 17th century, this is a charming, 300-year-old, Grade II-listed Lakeland cottage. Alongside all of the modern comforts you'd hope for in a home from home, there are wonderful clues to the cottage's history, from the original beams and wood floors to the feature fireplace in the living room and polished oak doors throughout. On the ground floor you'll find a fantastic kitchen, dining room and wonderful living room with wood burning stove. The two bedrooms, a double and a twin, are on the first floor along with the family shower room. As well as parking for two cars, there's a delightful cottage garden to enjoy.

Located in the peaceful hamlet of Skelwith Fold, the cottage is tucked away from the hustle and bustle but within easy reach of the South Lakes - you really have got the best of both worlds here. Surrounded by beautiful countryside, there are fantastic walking opportunities close by. Enjoy a circular walk around Loughrigg Tarn or follow the riverside path to picturesque Elterwater. From here you can continue to the pretty village of Chapel Stile, the gateway to the magnificent Langdale Valley. For a longer day out on the fell tops, avid hikers should head for Wansfell Pike and the challenging Fairfield Horseshoe.

A 15-minute drive will take you into bustling Ambleside. With its array of outdoor and independent shops, it's perfect for a spot of retail therapy. Neighbouring Bowness-on-Windermere has plenty of attractions, including The World of Beatrix Potter. Why not catch the ferry across the lake to Hawkshead? Another charming Lakeland village where you can visit Potter's former home at Hilltop. Head north to Keswick, the adventure capital of The Lakes, or south to Kirkby Lonsdale, a pretty market town that's home to poet Ruskin's favourite view.

Inside this chocolate-box Lakeland cottage, all of the period features sit seamlessly alongside the modern kitchen and shower room, so you're sure to feel right at home. The stylish kitchen is well equipped with an electric oven and hob, useful dishwasher, fridge with freezer compartment, toaster and the all-important kettle. The pretty dining room has a round wooden dining table, ideally positioned in the window, making it a lovely spot for a peaceful breakfast or a convivial evening meal. The characterful living room is at the front of the cottage; with original wooden beams and a wonderful fireplace with wood burning stove, it's perfect for cosy evenings in. Due to the age and quirky character of the cottage, there is a step up into the living room so do watch your step.

Upstairs on the first floor are the two lovely bedrooms. First up is the master, which has wonderful views over the front garden to the surrounding countryside. In here you'll find a double bed, perfect for indulging in a long lie in - you are on holiday after all! This room is full of character, from the wood panelling behind the bed to the original exposed floorboards. The cosy twin bedroom is just as charming, with painted wardrobes and a pleasant outlook over the beautiful greenery surrounding the cottage.

Also on the first floor is the fabulous modern shower room. With a WC, wash basin and modern electric shower, it's ideal for refreshing tired muscles after a day out exploring.

To the front is a delightful cottage garden, with original cobbles and a beautiful wisteria trailing over the garden gate.

There is parking for two cars in the layby opposite the cottage.

This cottage is set in the most peaceful location with wildlife in abundance. It has such a lot of wonderful kitchen equipment that it feels like you are at home. The bed and sofas were very comfortable too. We tried to walk from the cottage most days and found some really varied walks. We have already booked to come back in September!!

Lovely cottage. Location remote so do need a car. Cottage clean and beautifully kept. If you love birds bring or buy bird food both front and back gardens will provide great watching opportunities. If you are visiting in a busy holiday period do research on top restaurants/ pubs if you wish to go out as most fully booked.

Loved this cottage and the location. Roads a tad hairy so be prepared to reverse. Cottage very well equipt and log fire makes for a very cosy feel. Lots of places to explore but would suggest taking your own torch for any evening dog walks. No light or noise pollution loved it. Bird feeders out the front are a lovely touch.

Lovely cosy cottage which is well equipped. Unfortunately the very patchy WiFi meant watching TV was virtually impossible, which is a shame when its a wet evening in the Lakes ! The location is lovely, but beware of the narrow lanes and we found the best access was via The Drunken Duck Inn.
