Neighbouring Bowness-on-Windermere has plenty of attractions, including The World of Beatrix Potter. Why not catch the ferry across the lake to Hawkshead? Another charming Lakeland village where you can visit Potter's former home at Hilltop. Head north to Keswick, the adventure capital of The Lakes, or south to Kirkby Lonsdale, a pretty market town that's home to poet Ruskin's favourite view.
