An ivy-clad cottage nestled in a blissfully leafy countryside location in the Cumbrian village of Applethwaite. This homely country hideaway is perfect for families or small groups of friends and their waggy-tailed companions. Ascend past craggy ridges and snow-dusted peaks en route to the summit of Skiddaw (4 miles) before unwinding with an evening tipple in the warmth of the open fire.

Steeped in history, this homely property features a classic interior. Enjoy original fireplaces, polished wooden furniture, and spacious rooms. Step into the slate-flagged entrance hall and slip off mud-caked boots. Settle in for a post-adventure supper in the light-flooded dining space with tranquil garden views. Unwind in the wonderfully sociable lounge. Sink onto the seats and blether over an evening tipple, peruse the bookshelf for an easy read, or gather for a crowd-pleaser film around the Smart TV. In cooler months, chase away the chill with the roaring open fire. Whip up some late-night nibbles in the galley kitchen. Ascend the curved staircase to find three attractive bedrooms. Here, you can nab the master king-size with sweeping countryside views, sink into the sheets of the cosy twin, or drift off in the airy single. Outdoors, roam in the 4.5 acres of lush private land. Scope out the waterfall, stroll beneath ancient moss-covered trees, or settle in for an al fresco dinner.

Embark on an epic hike with breathtaking scenery on the Coledale Fells trail (5 miles) or enjoy a gentler pace with a saunter around Derwentwater (3 miles). Keen cyclists will delight in tackling the mountain trails at Whinlatter Forest Park (6 miles) while the leisure seekers cafe hop browse for souvenirs in Keswick (2 miles).

The Ghyll is a pretty cottage nestled above Applethwaite with great access for walking. It is homely, if a little dated. We stayed in late October and got through 3 bags of coal. I guess thats what you get with solid walls and single glazing.

The cottage is in a beautiful setting and close to keswick and other attractions. It is however a bit like stepping into a museum. If you like old and antique then its idea for you. The beds were very comfortable though and we had peace and quiet. The drive and turning are tight for larger cars.

This is a charming "olde-worlde" cottage in a beautiful peaceful location. Despite differing floor levels which could be hazardous, the cottage has wonderful character and it was a privilege to be given the opportunity to stay there. We had a most enjoyable holiday.
