Retreat to this terraced character cottage, 6 miles from Cockermouth and 7 miles north of Keswick. The village centre is reached within a mile and has swings and space for ball games, and you can see the resident ducks in the stream. This rural setting offers countless walking opportunities, including climbing the mighty Skiddaw and the riverside trail to the Lord's Seat (both 6 miles), Ullock Pike (5 miles) and Binsey Fell (3 miles) which was described by Wainwright as 'a simple walk for a big view'. A gentle climb of 3 miles from Bassenthwaite brings you to the Cumbria Way and Dash Falls. Or a 3-mile stroll through fields takes you to the ancient church of St Bega. The Lake District Wildlife Park (1 miles) and an alpaca farm (1.5 miles) are among the nearby family-friendly activities, while adult groups can pay a visit to the local distillery (1.5 miles).

The front door opens into the hallway, leading to an open-plan lounge/dining room. This has a Smart TV, a wood burner housed in a brick fireplace, cushy seating and two windows; there’s also a dining table with seating for the whole group. A charming kitchen provides everything you need to self-cater during your visit. On the first floor is the master bedroom which has a pretty double bed, and a second double bedroom has space for the cottage’s cot to be set up if required. The stylish family bathroom is on this level with a walk-in shower.

To the front of the property there is a private bench in the shared courtyard space.

Very pleased with location, cleanliness and comfort of the cottage. Unfortunately we were let down by heating not being switched on prior to our arrival as detailed in the welcome book (arriving with the temperature at 8 degrees Cent.). While kitchen and bedroom heaters could be switched to provide instant heat, the storage heater in the lounge beinRead moreg on "off peak" (on at 12 midnight) did not produce any heat until the following day. This was completely unacceptable as the living room was too cold to be used. Arriving after 3.00pm we should not have been expected to go searching for logs for the stove, and in any case for the price paid for the property the least we could have expected was a starter kit for the stove. We note from the visitors book that a welcome pack has been provided, which we did not get. This spoiled our first day and initial impressions of the property. Hide

The location of the cottage was misleading. It is said to be down a private road but that is actually the driveway off a main road - the A591 - which is very busy. If the description has been better it would have saved 30 minutes of searching and the need to ring your office for real time instructions. Also, being 5 yards from busy traffic would haRead moreve put me off the cottage location. There was also the inconvenience of not being able to walk anywhere safely from the cottage. It was a cold week. There were some logs for the stove (needed and effective) but once they ran out we had no idea of where to buy any more. We did not want to spend our holiday on a log hunt! Hide

Cosy country cottage, very convenient for Derwent water. Food at Back Tavern Inn at Keswick is recommended, particularly if gluten free is necessary.
