The barn is stylishly furnished, with original features, which include beams and period fireplaces. A boot room for muddy boots and washing paws leads to the light-filled kitchen and bright dining area. The double-aspect living room is a welcoming space, with comfortable, colourful sofas and a wood burner. Upstairs are two family bathrooms and four inviting bedrooms. These comprise two super-king-size, with zip-and-link beds that can be made into twins, and two super-king-size, one with a Juliet balcony looking out to the fells. Outside, are two seating areas with splendid views: a patio to the front and a garden lawn with a BBQ.
Smardale Gill (3 miles) is a National Nature Reserve, where steep wooded slopes contrast with spectacular views from the footpath along a former railway viaduct. This is a great place for spotting butterflies and wildflowers. Take a trip from Kirkby Stephen station on the beautiful Settle to Carlisle line to explore the historic market town of Appleby (8.5) miles, famous for its annual horse fair. Kirkby Stephen also has a historic, 19th-century station and steam railway, open at weekends from Easter to December, with train rides on special event days.
