Swimmers can take the plunge at the open-air pools at Shap or Asham (May to September), both under 15 miles away. There are equestrian centres within 15 miles, so ride out through the beautiful countryside. For a taste of the Lake District, Pooley Bridge (15.5 miles) is the starting point for hikes to suit all abilities or continue to Ullswater (20 miles) and take one of the steamers on the lake.
