Relax in this sweet, cosy hideaway just perfect for two or for small families. In the early 20th century it was an Arts and Crafts artist's studio belonging to the owner’s Great Aunt Maud (hence the name). It has now been beautifully renovated to create a fabulous, open-plan, two-storey cottage set within the wonderful gardens of the 14th century Johnby Hall Estate.
By prior arrangement with the owners you can breakfast in the Great Hall at Johnby, a stunning sandstone manor house which has grown around its original pele tower. Clues to its history are peppered around its grounds which you are welcome to explore – there is a lovely walled orchard, and a fantastic woodland area to while away the hours.
If you fancy venturing further afield you can choose between the majestic Lake District fells, or the alluring Eden Valley. Your nearest lake is Ullswater, just a 15-minute drive away – why not try the gentle tree-covered amble to the inspiring Aira Force waterfall? Alternatively hop on the bike to explore the local lanes and the Coast to Coast cycle way also passes by just down the road. The charming town of Penrith is on the doorstep (10 minutes away) and has a wealth of independent shops to explore.
The whole place has been thoughtfully designed for you to make the most of the history and magic of its ancient situation while still benefiting from all the comforts of a warm and welcoming modern home.
The front door takes you straight into the main living area with its antique furniture and sumptuous textiles. A well-tuned grand piano graces the corner which you are welcome to play, with comfortable seating arranged either side. There is a Smart TV. The lounge also has a sofa bed (please request at time of booking).
The kitchen has a table for dining and is fully equipped with dishwasher, fridge, fan oven, halogen hobs, and plenty of storage space. There is also a washing machine (no tumble dryer).
The bathroom is also downstairs and has an electric shower.
The open tread stairs with rope handrail open out to the bedroom with an amazingly comfy king-size bed with memory-foam mattress and antique furniture (some people think the huge wardrobe leads to Narnia). There is an additional single bed, also with memory-foam mattress.
Moving outside it's hard to know where to begin. There are shared gardens which are a wonderful sun trap when the weather allows, ideal for a morning cuppa or a sunset glass of wine! The rest of the shared grounds are a spellbinding world to explore. There's the walled orchard with apples, damsons, quinces and medlars where pheasants happily roam around, large lawns, a summer house with a magnificent panorama, woodland for your pooches to discover and last but certainly not least some exceedingly handsome pigs as neighbours (Johnby Hall houses a working farm).
Once you've turned up the driveway to this magical world I'm certain it will be a place you'll want to visit time and time Again. This property can be booked with another property on site to accommodate larger groups.
