Property code: SZ102

This cottage, named after the bridge that crosses Allonby Beck to the front of the property, is a deceptively large 18th-century dwelling in the centre of the small village of Allonby. The village is situated on the north west coast of Cumbria, between Maryport and Silloth, in a designated Area of Outstanding Beauty. The cottage can sleep up to ten people; the dining room can seat up to ten guests, although the seating in the living room is better suited to six. Dogs are welcome and there is a small fully enclosed yard to the rear of the property.

Allonby village was originally established by Quakers and boasts several splendid buildings including the Old Baths, North Lodge, Christ Church, and the 'Reading Room', which was designed by Alfred Waterhouse, famous for designing Manchester’s Town Hall, and London’s Natural History Museum. The cottage is a stone's throw from the long sandy beach, with fine views across the Solway Estuary to the mountains of southern Scotland. Popular with families and dog walkers, the Cumbrian Coastal Way passes through the village, and walkers can enjoy many miles of green sea-banks.

The village has a long history of being a sea-bathing resort, going back to the 18th century, when the fashion for bathing, and even drinking sea water, was considered a health cure. Today’s visitors can still enjoy the beach – a cleanliness and safety winner – and also take advantage of windsurfing and Twentyman’s famous ice cream, a well-known homemade treat. The village keeps much of its Georgian and Victorian charm, with cobbled lanes, curious corners to explore, and some interesting old houses. In what was once the main street stands an imposing colonnaded building (above), which was once the indoor baths where delicate Victorians could have their sea water comfortably warmed, in a suite of hot, cold, and vapour baths.

Boasting incredible sea views over the Solway Estuary, this cottage is perfect for families and dog owners. The cottage is located just a short walk from the beach.

Upon entering the cottage, you will find the living room and kitchen to your left and the dining room to your right. The dining room has space to seat up to ten guests. The living room has sea views and has a three-piece cream leather suite, a warming coal-effect electric fire and FreeSat TV which connects to the internet, so don't forget your Netflix/Prime logins. The kitchen features a large electric oven with a five-ring ceramic hob and warmer, a freestanding fridge/freezer and microwave.

From the kitchen, the back door opens into a small fully-enclosed yard. There is an out house that has been converted into a utility room and contains a washing machine, tumble dryer and sink.

Three bedrooms are located on the first floor: a four-posted double bedroom and a twin bedroom, both with sea views and another double bedroom overlooking the yard behind. The second floor has a queen-size bedroom and a double bedroom, both with Velux windows. There is plenty of storage room across the bedrooms.

Upstairs, the first of two family bathrooms sits on a split level between the ground and first floors and contains an shower over the bath, WC and hand basin. The second bathroom can be found on the second floor and features a corner bath with a hand-held shower, WC and basin.

An unreserved parking space is available outside the house, there is plenty of space available in the cul-de-sac and a free car park is located just across the road next to the beach.

We had a good stay - beds were comfy and bedding/towels were clean. The equipment was great apart from the need of some oven gloves. The lounge is way too small for 10 - it only seats 6-7 comfortably. The yard is too small for 4 dogs and doesnt get the sun. Allonby itself is lovely and we would come back but the shortcomings and aged feeling of theRead more house mean we wont return to this property Hide

Living room not quite big enough for the ammount of bedrooms so therefor guests. The doors need to close on all the bedrooms so that you can keep the dogs out or a stairgate on the bottom of the stairs would also work. The bedrooms are all good sizes and comfy and clean. The back yard was very small but secure for the dogs. Plenty of parking. We haRead mored 4 cars and had no trouble. The area was lovely and the dogs and kids loved the beach. The icecream shop is also a convenience store Hide

As per other reviews the lounge is small for 10 but we managed by adding a couple of kitchen chairs. Definitely need oven gloves and bath mats. But we had a great time and it was a lovely spot for a family New Year together thank you!

Our only niggles were we had to wash a lot of things up before we could use them, the tea towels didnt smell great and the knives were very blunt, we didnt find a sharpener. But it was a beautiful, characterful house, we were very content there and the location next to the massive, beautiful beach was ideal for walking the dog. Not too far from theRead more lakes so it was a bonus to have sea, and lakes and mountains all accessible. Thank you for our lovely family holiday. Hide

There were 4 of us with 2 dogs and so plenty of space. Very, very comfortable in the house with easy parking in front. Two main bedrooms had great sea views. Ideal for beach access. House was perfectly presented so thank you.

The property was clean and tidy, ideal for beach days with the beach being within a couple of minutes walk, just over the road in fact, with a cafe, park and other facilities close by. Free parking a bonus as we had four vehicles. We had a very relaxing family holiday.

Bridge house is proper old property with a stone staircase. Although a little dated we found the property clean and tidy and adequate for our needs. The heating only coming on at certain times was a downside as we got there it was freezing. Relying on electric radiators. The floors were creeking and the rooms a fair size. The kitchen and lounge area are a bit cramped for 10 people. In the winter, with the weather being wet and cold it would have been nice if there was a tv in the bedrooms to watch a movie and chill at night as there's not enough room for everyone in the lounge. It was a little dated but very well equipped, clean and tidy.
