Partly refurbished in early 2020, this characterful holiday home is tucked away on a quiet lane in the village of Thornthwaite. Surrounded by forest with glimpses of Skiddaw, it is a peaceful escape from everyday life. With three bedrooms sleeping five people upstairs and a comfortable living room downstairs plus an additional snug there is plenty of room for a family or two couples to spend time together whilst also having their own space. The enclosed, west facing front garden has chairs and a table from where you can enjoy the sun later in the day. Full of character and a little bit quirky, the property invites you to come in and make yourself at home.

Thornthwaite is a small village that is close - but not too close! - to the A66 and so benefits from great transport links. The property is tucked away at the edge of the village right at the foot of Whinlatter Forest, which stretches for miles and offers some great walking and off-road cycling. Braithwaite is just 2 miles away with a choice of pubs and a shop. Otherwise, carry on a little further and visit the vibrant town of Keswick with shops, cafes, pubs and restaurants galore plus numerous picturesque walks, beautiful Derwentwater and a couple of museums. Keswick is also home to the Theatre by the Lake offering a wide mix of shows and events throughout the year at a purpose-built theatre.

Should you feel the need to explore further afield, the Georgian market town of Cockermouth is just a 15-minute drive away with a good range of independent shops and eateries plus a couple of supermarkets and Wordsworth's childhood home. Explore Bassenthwaite Lake, one of the lesser known lakes and home to one of the pairs of Lake District ospreys, indulge yourself with a tour at the Lakes Distillery, or have an afternoon in the spa at Armathwaite. Beautiful Buttermere is just the other side of Newlands Pass and all the northern and western fells are yours for the walking. The Solway coast, Eden Valley, Carlisle and Hadrian's Wall country are also very accessible.

The property is a lovely combination of a comfortable and charming house in a quiet location which is still within easy reach of everything going on in the area.

Enter through the front gate into the enclosed front garden and down the path to the front door, inside is a small hallway with coat hooks above the radiator and the stairs leading up ahead.

Turn to the right into the main living room with cosy log burning stove. Two 2-seat sofas face the Smart TV with DVD player. There is also a Samsung Bluetooth speaker in the living room, which you can connect your smartphone to. The two big sash windows look over the front garden to the trees beyond and bring in plenty of light. Side tables with lamps are handily placed for holding a cuppa while you put your feet up and relax. The living room is semi-open plan with the dining table seating 5 sitting in the archway between the living room and the galley kitchen.

The window looks out to the back of the house and off to the left is a handy downstairs cloakroom with toilet and sink.

On the right of the dining area the well equipped galley style kitchen is on 2 levels with a step between them, on the lower level the cooking area includes electric oven and hob, Nespresso coffee machine, microwave, toaster and plenty of storage space. On the higher level at the back is a large fridge/freezer, belfast sink with tiled splashback and a washer dryer. A door leads out of the end of the kitchen to the side of the house with access back into the front garden.

Linking the upper part of the kitchen back through into the main living room is the cosy snug. Set up with 2 armchairs , a beanbag and a Smart TV (please note, this TV doesn't have Freeview channels) with a wii this is could be a living space just for the children or ideal if there are any differences in opinion over the tv remote! The large window looks out over the front garden making this a lovely bright room. There is a step down back into the main living room.

Head up the carpeted stairs and there is a long hallway right along the back of the house, it is the windows here that just give a glimpse of the Skiddaw group of fells through the trees. Right at the end of the hallway is the family bathroom with a shower over the bath and a towel rail over the radiator for snuggly warm towels regardless of whether you've enjoyed a quick blast in the shower or a long soak in the bath.

Back to the top of the stairs and the first bedroom on the right is a cosy double with a window looking over the village houses to the woods rising up the hillside beyond. Everything you need is here with bedside tables, chest of drawers, wardrobe, chair, a mirror on the wall and a soft warm rug on the varnished floorboards.

Next along is the biggest bedroom with king-size bed, bedside tables, chest of drawers, wardrobe, mirror and chair. There are rugs and a similar tranquil view to the other bedrooms, open the window and the soundtrack will be dominated by birdsong.

The final bedroom at the end of the landing next to the bathroom is a single with bedside table and a wardrobe with drawers beneath, this room also has a rug and a mirror and a lovely view up the wooded valley with cottages lining the lane.

Outside the enclosed front garden is mostly laid to slate chip and paving with a flower bed and some tubs to add colour and greenery. There is a table and chairs for enjoying some fresh mountain air, peace and quiet and the views of the surrounding woodlands.

Upon arrival, access was simple using the guide to open the key safe. The cottage is spacious, but extremely homely. An ample sized living room, and adjacent nook, were the perfect space for our party of 5 (2 adults, 3 children) to spend the evenings. The kitchen was well equipped with all mod-cons. The 3 bedrooms (2 double and 2 single) were a perRead morefect size, with extremely comfortable beds. The bathroom was impeccably clean, with a powerful, easy to use shower. We would definitely recommend. Hide

It was moldy, wet on the walls, there was dust under the beds. The atmosphere in the hallway was old.

Lovely cottage, at the foot of Whinlatter forest. Perfect location for commute to Keswick and easy access to major roads. Parking could be tricky during peak season, but we managed with one car. Lovely gallery/coffee shop just down the road. Everything catered for in the property, with very comfy sofas and the extra snug with more seating was lovelRead morey. Bedding and towels were of exceptional quality. Wed definitely stay again!! (Do take tea/coffee n sugar, as none provided) Hide
