This tranquil part of the northern Lake District has wonderful walking and cycling on the doorstep. It has the feeling of remoteness while also being just 3 miles from wonderful Ullswater. Footpaths fan out from the yard giving access to Great Mell Fell, Little Mell Fell and to join the Ullswater Way. Why not bring the bikes and explore the quiet roads and lovely bridleways of Matterdale? Bike storage can be arranged in advance with the owners who live on site. You can also walk to stunning Aira Force from the door or down to Ullswater's shore where you can catch one of the stately steamers which wind their way around the lake. The view of mighty Helvellyn from the cottage might even inspire you to take on this Lakeland giant during your stay.
Just slightly further off there's plenty to explore. Historic Dalemain, just 6 miles away, makes a lovely day out while at Rheged Visitor Centre you can browse at the shops and exhibitions, pop to the spa or take in a film on their giant 3D screen. The popular Cumbrian towns of Keswick and Penrith are both an easy drive away and there are several well-renowned pubs in the surrounding villages for a treat after your outdoor adventures.
On arrival at the property guests enter via an outside staircase and terrace in to the front door. There is an entrance hall with hanging space for coats and even an electric boot dryer which can come in very handy for muddy footwear.
The open-plan living, dining and kitchen area is to the left of the hall. It's a delightful space with a lovely deep two-seater sofa, an electric fire, a TV with Freeview and DVD with a selection of DVDs thoughtfully left by the owner along with a foldaway dining table with two chairs. The focal point is a glorious recessed picture window with a stylish armchair to sit and revel in the fell views. The cottage overlooks a small tarn attracting wildfowl such as oyster catchers and curlews while regular wildlife visitors include hares and deer so be sure to bring your binoculars. The well-equipped compact kitchen has two ceramic hobs, a built-in fan oven, microwave and fridge with small freezer compartment.
The gorgeous bedroom is across the hall from the living area. There's a romantic king-size metal bed frame with Vispring mattress for a fabulous night's sleep. Have a morning cuppa in bed as the window looks out onto a bank with bird feeders. The room has a stylish wardrobe and chest of drawers and bright fresh decor. The bathroom is accessed from the hallway too, it has a white suite with an electric shower over the bath and a high roof window.
Outside the cottage benefits from gorgeous views and its own designated parking for two cars. There's a beautiful raised terrace outside the front door with a dining set for making the most of the day's sunshine. There is lockable storage for bikes available, by prior arrangement with the owners. The cottage next door sleeps four and both cottages are available for hire together to accommodate parties of eight who wish to share a holiday together.
