Occupying a wonderful elevated position overlooking rolling fields, gorgeous fells and even a miniature steam railway, this is an ideal cottage for six in lovely Eskdale. This characterful and charming semi-detached home has three beautifully appointed bedrooms, plenty of socialising space and wonderful views making this an ideal destination for families or groups of friends wanting to make the most of the unparalleled natural surroundings. The owners have included countless details to make the cottage warm and welcoming and up to two dogs are welcome along too.
Eskdale Green has a charming untouched feel about it. There's a friendly village shop a short stroll away and two well-loved village pubs within an easy mile's walk. The wider Eskdale Valley is one of the most unspoilt areas in the national park. From here, you can make the most of some wonderful walking and cycling opportunities, take a marvellous narrow gauge steam engine to the nearby coast or just relax and enjoy the wonderful views in the valley that Wainwright described as “One of Lakeland’s loveliest”. It’s a place of hidden treasures with crystal-clear rivers, dramatic waterfalls and even a Japanese garden lovingly restored from its Victorian heyday just a stone's throw from the property.
There's plenty to do only slightly further afield too. Muncaster Castle is an award-winning visitor attraction nearby with wonderful grounds, amazing birds of prey displays and a fascinating history. Just beyond Muncaster is Ravenglass, the only coastal village within the Lake District National Park. It's got a rich and varied history dating back to Roman times, the evidence of which is well worth exploring. The nearby valley of Wasdale is home to the country's most iconic mountain peaks, Britain's favourite view and also England's deepest lake - just the place for picnic and paddle. However you'd like to spend your stay in this lovely area, this cottage is an ideal starting point.
Stone built and with a wealth of period features, it boasts three well-appointed bedrooms, plenty of well-thought-through socialising spaces, wonderful gardens and simply glorious views of the surrounding countryside. The owners have provided plenty of thoughtful touches to make the cottage a warm and comfortable haven you’re sure to want to visit again.
On arrival at the front porch, guests enter into the welcoming tiled hallway. To the right is the delightful traditional living room with two comfy leather sofas arranged around an open fire and a television with Freeview and a DVD player for entertainment. The room is enhanced with some lovely local art and photography to inspire your adventures and a handsome grandfather clock to keep you on time. Back across the hallway, you’ll find the stone flagged dining room with its dining set for six and a wonderful window seat to take in the magnificent view. There’s an electric fire to keep you cosy over long post-dinner conversations and dressers with a great choice of books to keep you entertained.
To the rear of the house, there’s the well-equipped kitchen. In here, you’ll find a double oven with ceramic hobs, microwave, counter-top dishwasher, washing machine, under-counter fridge and space-saver freezer. Lastly, on the ground floor, is the handy snug. Boasting a further TV with Freeview and DVD player, it also has two comfy armchairs and a table football game to keep you amused. It’s a wonderful cosy space to escape and read a book, or for teens and tweens, to commandeer as their entertainment room.
Heading up the corner staircase, past the lovely stained-glass window, brings you to the bedrooms and bathroom. First to the gorgeous master bedroom which has a king-size wooden bed frame, a wardrobe and dresser for storage, a decorative fireplace and, if you can tear yourself away from the beautiful view, a TV with Freeview. Next to the romantic light filled room, like the master bedroom, this has a king-size bed, a decorative fireplace, a wardrobe, dresser as well as a TV with Freeview. The twin bedroom looks out to the sloping lawn to the back of the house and has a dresser for storage. Lastly, to the wonderfully spacious bathroom. In here, you’ll find an electric shower in a large enclosure as well as a beautiful Victorian-style clawfoot bath with shower attachment, the ideal place for soaking away tired fell-walking muscles.
The outside space is no less charming than the interior of the cottage. There’s a handy covered area immediately to the rear of the house where you can store bikes, a wonderful raised terrace with wooden bench for outdoor dining; alternatively take the stone stairs, hewn from local rock, to the rear garden where there’s a lawn and bird feeders to attract feathery visitors from the forest behind the cottage. The gardens and parking area are enclosed by double five-bar gates. There’s parking space for two cars but please note that the drive is very short but fairly steep and so therefore unsuitable for low wheel-base cars. There is additional parking further up the road (75m from the house).
