Overflowing with character, this beautifully-renovated former Victorian schoolhouse just outside Pooley Bridge is dotted with impressive original features, like its bell tower. Sleeping six people across three bedrooms, it’s the ideal detached, single-storey holiday home for families or groups of friends who want to get together to enjoy the best of the Lake District. Spend your days hiking at Aira Force Waterfall, exploring Lowther Castle or cruising Ullswater, and your evenings spotting red squirrels in the garden or warming your toes by the wood burner in the lounge.

Step into the lobby and you’ll find that it opens up into the spacious kitchen and a light and bright south-facing dining area. Cook up a storm for your loved ones and gather everyone together to eat around the dining table. After dinner, pour a glass of wine and head out into the garden to take in the views across the fields. If you’re lucky, you may spot a red squirrel. Or make your way to the lounge to slip onto a sofa and catch up on your favourite TV shows by the glow of the wood burner. When the day is done, there are three lovely bedrooms to choose from.

Spend an afternoon browsing the local shops in Pooley Bridge (0.5 miles), where you’re sure to find plenty of local fudge and gin. Stop off for afternoon tea in a traditional teashop or enjoy a pint in one of the village pubs. Alternatively, take a trip on one of the famous Ullswater Steamers, which have connected Pooley Bridge, Howtown, Glenridding and Aira Force for 160 years. You can even take your bikes on board if you want to check out the different bike routes around Ullswater. Take a trip to Rheged (5 miles), to explore the gallery, shops and creative spaces.

Wonderful, clean and well equipped single level property full of character. Lots of additional information provided for guest in folders which was very helpful and thoughtful. Stunning location - excellent cottage with everything you could need. Fantastic to have a bathroom for every room - so convenient. I would not hesitate to return as the location again, is marvellous - walking distance into Pooley Bridge but so private. The ferry is hit and miss - we took the bus to Glenridding.

Super house, clean, spacious and so well equipped (kitchen scales!) Fabulous area to visit, recommend buying a walking guide and getting out on the fells. Loved Hells Kitchen Pizza Van and the local gelato available in the village - a lovely walk across fields.

The ground floor accommodation was perfect for our party. The cottage is in a quiet spot, away from the crowds. It is light and airy and handy for Ullswater and other places. Very comfortable. We enjoyed our stay.

Quiet location, fantastic house, very well equipped, and it was like a home from home. My Mum and Dad ( aged 89 and 90 respectively ), really enjoyed the stay too, as all the accommodation was across the one floor. Great comfy lounge and a big dining table in the kitchen we also used for games each evening. We've stayed at Barton School house twice now, a few years apart, and loved both stays. The cottage is full of character and has plenty of space; there's peace/quiet but it's not far from Penrith etc. We saw lots of birds in the garden and the resident red squirrel which was wonderful! Pooley Bridge is a 10min downhill walk away (bit harder on the Read morereturn!) with several pubs/cafes and shops. We enjoyed time on the Ullswater lake cruise and drove to stunning locations around the Lakes. Thank you! Hide

Our second visit for Christmas. Cottage was decorated for Christmas, lovely and warm with the additional benefit of a log fire. We cooked a full Christmas dinner for six so you can tell the kitchen has all necessaries and Pooley Bridge had excellent eateries for other meals. Really enjoyed our stay. Thanks again.
