Part of a small terrace of miner’s cottages dating back to the 19th century, this traditional property has been beautifully updated to provide warm and cosy accommodation for two guests. Situated in a wooden glade half a mile from the southern shores of Ullswater and offering lovely views across the lake, this pretty period cottage makes a picturesque base for eager walkers and nature lovers discovering the area’s beautiful woodlands, villages, lakes and fells. Featuring original timber beams, an inviting wood burner and a stone fireplace, this romantic retreat is an ideal escape for a couple seeking a secluded Lakeland hideaway.

The cottage is reached along an unmade woodland track, with a porch leading into the delightful open-plan pitch-pine lounge/kitchen/diner. With exposed ceiling beams, a welcoming wood burner, TV and plenty of seating, the bright and refreshing lounge is an ideal space to snuggle up together in the evening. The central dining table is perfect for sharing a romantic meal for two which you can enjoy cooking in the stylishly arranged kitchen. A short staircase leads upstairs to a fresh, light and high-ceilinged double bedroom with built-in wardrobes and a charming wainscoted en-suite bathroom with a traditional roll-top bath. The limed-oak floors of the bedroom and bathroom benefit from cosy underfloor heating. Outside, the shared garden is visited by a variety of wildlife including red squirrels, and features a lawn with outdoor furniture, apple trees and hedges overlooking the valley.

Local attractions include Aira Force Waterfall (2.5 miles), Helvellyn (5.5 miles) and the friendly villages of Patterdale and Glenridding (both within 2.5 miles). This is a fantastic area with spellbinding walks, or you can head to Ullswater and cruise over the lake by steamship. Also nearby is the vibrant market town of Keswick (15.5 miles) on the shore of Derwentwater.

The cottage was ideal for our purposes and the location was magical. The property has been renovated to a very high standard and storage space has been ingeniously incorporated into the design. It was a real treat to be able to distance ourselves from the "Madding Crowd" in the cottage's serene surroundings and yet have such easy access to UllswateRead morer. We are regular visitors to the Lakes and this is definitely one of the most attractive properties we have stayed at. We would love to return! Hide

We loved the location and style of the Red Squirrel Den, but there are a few things that could be improved: - several lightbulbs were missing - no hairdryer - only huge logs and no kindling provided for fireplace - tired sofa could do with replacement - very low water pressure, we were unable to take a proper shower - we reached out to housekeepingRead more three times and never heard back. A fabulous, cozy cottage off the beaten track. The cottage is well named, as we saw red squirrels every day . The approach road has to be taken carefully, as it is prone to breakdown by rain etc Straightforward driving to Pooley Bridge, Rheged etc

Beautiful cottage, cosy, fabulous views.. had a lovely time here The track to the cottage is fine but if you aren't a confident driver as its a single track with no passing points you may find this off putting so be aware especially if you meet another car on way up or way down..

This is a very cosy, quickly little cottage and is well appointed. The location is lovely and the red squirrels playing in the garden together with the abundant bird life made our holiday special. Using the Aga to cook was great and I now want one at home. The bed linen was beautifully laundered and good quality. Overall we had a lovely stay.

Lovely cosy cottage in a special location. Perfect for a short break as a couple. Parking situation was a little precarious, we arrived late evening in an estate car and had a very narrow space remaining to turn and park on the track.
