- Mine and my sisters family have met up at Castlerigg Farmhouse for Christmas 2019 and we had an absolute fabulous time. My sister lives up in Scotland and we live in East of England so the Lakes are a good place for us to meet up. We wasn’t sure if there would be enough room for the week for all the family to be together but it simply did the job. There was ample of room for both the children (4 of them) and 6 adults. As soon as we entered the cottage we felt at home and the place just had a lovely cosy feel to it.
We cooked our mammoth Christmas dinner on Christmas Day and everyone sat around the large dinning table enjoying themselves. There was a plentiful supply of crockery, cutlery, glasses, pans which just made meal times easy. Beds were extremely comfy , the children’s bedroom at the top was very spacious for them to play.
Stunning views of Derwent Water from the windows from the front of the house. On Christmas Day some of the family went out for a walk and did a couple of fells, which was so convenient due to the location of the cottage. The owners had left a good supply of logs for us to get started with the woodburner which we topped up with our own later in the week. We did struggle with the heating at times though which was our only downside to the cottage. It was set on a timer which was fully understandable but we seemed to struggle to override it when we needed it on out of those times so there were times when we were quite cold in the other rooms. When we arrived we had been left with a lovely gift from the owners which contained a lot of lovely things for us to enjoy for example, wines, chocolates, biscuits which wasn’t expected at all so that was a lovely touch and thank you for that.
A suggestion for those booking with small children a standard stair gate won’t work as the staircase is wide so you would definitely need an extendable one. Our one 1 year old had a fab time climbing the stairs 😊 so it just kept all the adults on their toes but there was a curtain you could pull across which most of the time worked as a deterrent. They also provide a fire guard which was good.
Both Sally’s Cottages and the owners were fantastic when we experienced a problem with the bathroom with a leak which was very unfortunate but on the same day it was fixed and sorted so no further problems.
We would have loved to have been able to book it again for Christmas 2020 as we had a fantastic memorable week and knowing that the cottage worked for what we need but sadly it has been booked already for that week which is a shame as we would have definitely been revisiting the cottage.
Fantastic place and you cannot go wrong with it, the entire family would recommend Castlerigg Farmhouse to anyone!

Hello Gilly, Thank you for your lovely review. It's a fantastic cottage for a big get together, isn't it? The views are sublime! How wonderful to spend Christmas in the beautiful Lakes - there really is no better place to be. The welcome food and beverage gift sounds divine - I bet it went down a treat! You couldn't have picked a better location for getting out and about on some great walks - I can't think of anything more refreshing than a walk on the fells on Christmas Day. I have noted your feedback regarding the heating, and I will look into this further. I note Castlerigg Farmhouse is booked for Christmas 2020, however if you need any help in finding an alternative cottage, please feel free to get in touch - the team would be delighted to help. I'm thrilled you had a really great time and made lots of lovely memories. I very much hope you will come back and visit us soon!
