I have discovered that it is a stupid idea to go paddling when there’s snow on the ground.
It wasn’t an intentional activity mind you. We decided to explore the Kentmere valley. This is a little known valley situated between Windermere and Kendal. The road winds for several miles through the lovely rolling hills and comes to a stop near a church. There is limited parking at the church (about five cars) and this is where the epic began.
There was no room at the church so we drove back along the road until we could find a suitable place to park. Rather than walk along the road we followed a path through the fields until it ran out. We could see another path not far away. The only problem was there was a river in between us and the path.
Not to be daunted we decided we’d take off our socks and shoes and paddle over to the other side. So we did. And it was cold. A quick trip to Wilf’s café in Staveley Mill Yard though and we were fully restored. It was quite probably the best lunch I’ve had in a long time.
Kentmere is very handy if you're staying in our Windermere or Ambleside cottages, and lovely for a little tootle about.
